Alternator light coming on and off?

What generally is the cause for the alternator light to come on in a late 80's 3.2? The car just had a new battery installed at the beginning of the summer. The belt seems tight and not slipping. Is this the sign of an alternator that is starting to go bad? The light was coming on under low rpms and then would go off higher in the revs. I put a charge on the battery just in case I might of drained it and know when I run the car it is solid on for almost the whole time and just went off after about 30 minutes of driving.

This was the same symptom I had a while back. The light eventually just stayed on real dim. I had the alternator rebuilt locally for pretty cheap and everything has been great since. One other sign was that my headlights did oscilate a little at idle from the time I bought the car for about 3+ years. When I had the alternator rebuilt, the oscilation stopped.

I had the same prob three weeks ago. Tis either a poorly grounded ground wire or a faulty voltage regulator. The VR will cost about 35 and labor to the alt will be 15 if you've got a good alt shop and can take it out yourself. It''s not that difficult.
good luck

i've had ongoing alternator light problems over the years, have rebuilt alternator to no avail. however, i did get a result by just pulling the dial from teh instrument panel and cleaning all the contacts at the back there.
i discovered that one of them, which at first glance looked completely unrelated seemed to make the light come off and on!
might be worth a look.

(now however, both the oil light and alternator light go out, so something is not quite right in my car back there.)
