I owned an 83 Euro SC for 5 years. I sold it back in 99 to buy my 930. I still think about that car. It was the same color as Justin Baldwins car...Ruby Metallic I believe. My car had the fuchs color matched with the Ruby Metallic and polished lips 7's & 8's running a 75 Turbo Carrera tail.
That car was extremely versatile. Great sound, enough power, decent handling and extremely reliable. Yes...you drove the car...not the power assisted steering brakes, anti look...traction control...you name it. Since, I purchased a 70 911. Now there is the ultimate experience. It is true when they say the early 911 offer the best Porsche driving experience. Nothing compares to the short stroke scream of the 2.0 thru 2.4 engine Still, the SC's give you the best of all worlds and are affordable by Porsche standards. I did not do extrude - hone because I did not want to increase the size of the intake ports. I only wanted to polish. Two local Porsche mechanics felt that this was a more time (labor) intensive process but offered better performance results.

Hi from Australia, I've had a few Porsches in the past all have been front engine cars and yeah I've been in a 996 and they go pretty alright. An opportunity came to buy my first 911 just recently, it was a 81 911sc. There were a few bits and pieces that needed to be done to it and I have been refering to the Pelican parts website over and over (new clutch, general service etc etc) it was a steep learning curve. It still needs some new paint in places and a good polish plus the interior has seen better days, well its really just the seats they're tearing along the seams where the stiching is. I've had it looked at by my Porsche mechanic and he thinks everything seems to be in order.
Driving the car is the best part, the engine sounds and the raw race car feeling is great, I love 2nd gear!! I'm sure 3rd is just as fun but its hard to take advantage of most of the time. It hasn't got the original fuchs, the SC had cup rims on it when i bought it and I like them I think it makes it look a little more modern. Its funny how the 996 / 997 are starting to look more and more like the 928s4 / GTS. Last edited by seb-au; 08-27-2007 at 09:41 PM.. |

For the time being anyway, I'm in the other camp. I recently swtched from my *very* raw, modfied 911 to a MkII 996 and I prefer the 996.
Granted my lifestyle changed (kids, busy career) so I no longer had the time to enjoy the 911 as it was meant to be enjoyed, but damn it the 996 is one hell of a car. Maybe 42 years of bare bones driving finally got to me but the 996 is really the ultimate car for me right now. It's both a fantastic daily driver and an absolute screamer at speed. I feel the weight once in a while (my 911 was 2400 lbs) but at 3000 lbs for the 996, it's not all that much heavier than an average 3.2 Carrera. Six speeds, 320 hp, oversteer when you want(need) it.Call me converted. NOW - don't be pulling this post up when I one day get into another air cooled 911. I really do miss the noise and the real raw feeling, just not enough to give up my 996 yet.

Totally agree +++++.
There is no substitute TO DRIVE the air cool with its sound, no electronics, no power steering, mechanical suspension, no ABS, no PASM and no BS... real connected to the road machine. |

![]() I agree > the 911 SC was the sweetest .. makes incredible sound with SSI and M&K... good handling... affordable... I've had mine [80SC] 18 years now and still love her dearly

Hi Seb-au, welcome to the bbs. There are a number of Aussie guys guys around you may wish to talk tech over some VBs.
I've got 17" wheels like that on my SC and I love the look too. I think prefering the SC/Carrera look over the 996 look may a generational thing. As a kid it was set in my heart and mind what a Porsche looked like and what I wanted. |

I think you hit the nail right on the head Bill.
I seem to remember seeing a beautiful mid year Carrera or SC outside Watson's Bay pub on a Sunday afternoon when I was around 20 and that's when I fell in love. The image has remained etched in my mind ever since............ Phil

I have yet to drive an Elise. Some of these cars are just too fast to enjoy on the roads I drive. You don't have to drive a classic 911 fast to enjoy the feel. Engaging is what they are.
Not half slow either |

Hmmm... It probably is a generation thing in most cases but I think I'm a bit of an anomaly. I'm 24 and I've always loved the cars. As soon as I could drive I bought myself a 924 and the obsession started there. I was a front engine water cooled junkie for a while and then this car popped up and it reminded me a little of the Bad Boys 911 (964) turbo 3.6 which was my dream car as a kid and so I had to have it! But I suppose being exposed to Porsches at such an early age might have spawned a certain appreciation for them that other people my age dont have. And you're right DanielDudley it is very nice to cruise along in 50kmh but it just has this beautiful sound that comes from it when you put your foot down its hard to resist. I'm used to 928's (89 928s4) and they're so much more refined than the 911sc so driving the SC is a big change and such a pleasure.
That said this will definitely not be my last 911 so we'll see what comes up next... who knows maybe one day I'll have a water cooled 911 of my own and driving it everyday might give me a different opinion. Oh yeah and Cheers Bill for the welcome message. |
