Oh no, not another one

Finally got to work on my car today. Removed the bumpers and rear reflector panel/reflector. and trial fitted the RS rear bumper from Rennspeed. Looks like little work is needed.

The front will take a little more work as I'm waiting for some parts from TRE to complete the front fenders and to help align and set the height of the front bumper.

I'm "on the fence" as to whether I should attempt to save the hood I got off my free '67 912 or just buy a 'glass one. Longhood parts in Hawaii are impossible to find.

Good news about this hood is it's here, it was free and it has only the smallest rust-through on the front edge. The bad news is it is badly surface rusted.

I have a Doc appt tomorrow to take care of a nasty infection in my big toe. Hopefully it won't hinder my progress too much.

Aloha for now,
Tom

Good stuff, Its hard to believe you got that to stay up there with chewing gum:D. I am assuming you may have some parts for sale? say a short hood;) Also WTF, big toe infection, you have a grinder don't you.

Jays72T 08-27-2007 08:21 PM

Looking good Tom. I would get the hood blasted and see what you have, if that's the only "bad" rust you should be fine. It will require a lot of work to fill and sand smooth but....OTOH, a glass hood is lighter.

Good luck w/ the toe.

Severly ingrown toenail+proclivity towards kicking things+not getting alot of free time to go to doc's= much pain for Tommy

I may have a hood at that, as well as some factory Turbo flares, bumpers, valences, rubber smile etc. but we'll see how well my fenders turn out firstSmileWavy

Thanks Jay. I figure I'll strip what paint there is and and get the metal as clean as possible. Use an etching primer or something to seal. A couple of coats of high-build primer and lots of blocking.

hey Tom, that POR 15 prep stuff, the windex looking thing, will clean that hood up in 15 minutes. Just spray, wait, brush and hose...and voila brand new hood

village idiot 08-28-2007 02:04 AM

Thanks Radu, I'll give it a shot and post pics of the results!

I love your Jack Olsen self-portrait!

I'm looking forward to seeing the final results with paint.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks Matt:D Still deciding on the color as of now. Seems every time I have a color in mind someone comes into my shop and paints their car that exact color:mad:

The 930 ended up being a no-go. Didn't have enough time to get transportation into place for it. But oh well, for every deal you miss there's another one right around the corner(my philosophy).

I may have some interesting updates if things go right this weekendSmileWavy

yes, long hood parts are impossible to find indeed. Glad to see more local people on the board!

That place looks like the Shafter Hobby Shop...

i had a Daimler that had patches that looked like your hood. i ground out the rust, followed all the recommended procedures for derusting, priming, etc etc, and within months of finishing the rust was already coming through again. very depressing.
i have heard there is a process of hot dipping metal that burns out all the rust and coats the metal in a protective layer, but don't know any more.
personally, whilst i don't like fibreglass as first choice, i would use it, just to completely skirt that whole rust problem.
nothing worse than spending hours smoothing down bodywork only to see the dreaded tin worm reappear.
good luck

That's my biggest fear at this point.

Hickam hobby shop? Is that right next to the motorcycle shop? When are you usually there?

It's across the road from the motorcycle shop, behind the baseball fields. You have to detour around the construction areas but if you follow the signs you should have little trouble finding me. I'm scheduled there Wed to Sun after 11am but you can find me there most every day.:)
