1985 Carrera Starting/Running issue

Hey guys-

I have an 85 Carrera (wife's car, 98900 mi) that had been sitting for quite a few months (2-4). It had been started and driven very short distances (a couple of miles) in those months.

It was recently moved to our new residence (about 60 miles away) and along the way it began to cut out briefly.

Here are the symptoms: (The cars electrical system is functioning 100% at the time. (Windshield wipers going, lights on etc, don't go out when the engine dies.)

About 10 miles into the drive: At low RPMs (2000) the RPMS drop to 0 forcing me off the road. I restart and the engines comes back to life.

A few miles down the road it does this again very quickly. Drops to 0 but starts right back up without my assistance. It does this twice more. (I'm in 4th or 5th gear at the time about 2000-3000RPM)

About 40 miles into the drive home it starts to do it again. This time it forces me over, but every time I'm able to get it running again by cycling the ignition switch. It happened about 4-5 times right in a row at this time. Low to mid RPM. I would let it idle on the side of the road and it would suddenly stop.

It finally stopped doing it and I was able to make it the rest of the way home. Again, a total of about 60 miles.

The next morning I was going to drive it a little to see if I could find something. It started up right away, but after a minute or so, it dies. I try to restart, runs for about 5 secs then dies. A 3rd try produces nothing. Now it won't start.

I have 12 volts at the coil (the + - terminals) when I have the key on acc. I have 12 volts on the coil main plug wire also. I unhooked the coil plug and checked voltage out when I crank: 12+ volts in ac. and 10+ volts when cranking.

My first thought is it's electrical. Relay or something. Something to do w/ the FI (board)?

Any thoughts on where I should begin?

There's a high possibility it could be your DME relay. Always handy to have a spare anyway. These are the same symptoms that my car displayed when the relay was giving up.

Thanks guys! That was it. You guys rock!

I pulled the relay off cleaned the contacts and pulled (inadvertanly) the cover of the relay off which I could watch the 2 contacts pull in and out.

I saw the one closest to the connection chatter a bit. But I got the car started and let it run for a few minutes.

Ordering a relay now......

You'll notice that the relay connects to the plug "sideways"....the entire relay "hangs" in the air.

Over time and with vibration, this causes the "base" (where the plug-in pins are) to flex and crack the solder-points inside. Oftentimes a "bad" relay can be fixed re-soldering it.

Hint...place a rubber block under the relay and have it ever-so-gently support the weight of the relay ...so not to have an overhanging load.

Dumb Germans !!!.......

PS, why is your car listed as an 911SC and we're talking 3.2's relays ??
