Outside mirror replacement

I would like to replace the mirror (glass only) but I can't find any instruction on how to do this.

It's not, unless somebody previously changed the whole mirror assembly. The mirror on the earlier cars was attached in a different way. There are three prongs glued to the back of the mirror that fit into holes in the base plate (the part that moves when you adjust the mirror.) Basically, you carefully pry the glass off of the base plate, trying to not break the prongs off at the glue joint.

Adjust the mirror so you can see behind the glass with a flashlight and I think you'll get the idea.

Here's a diagram from the Pelican catalog that might help. The three small holes that you see on the base plate (part number 8) are the ones that the prongs fit into.

Outside mirror replacement

Thank you all for the advice. JR, I will try the screwdriver method - I almost went with this but I hate breaking things without getting advice from you knowledgeable Porscheaholics.

yes, I think the 77 flag mirror was held on with prongs. Push the glass in at the top with the thumb of one hand, and use a plastic spatula, like the kind you use to flip pancakes with, to carefully pry the glass loose with the other hand. The plastic will be flexible, and will provide some support for the glass so you don't chip or shatter it.

While it is out, clean and retighten the connectors for heat and the motor movement. These can work their way loose.

My '85 utilized the 3 prong attachment method as well. The later mirrors used a lock ring....

3 prong type (Prongs pressure fit into the plasticc bushings-pry carefully to remove):

later locking ring style (started '86 or '87):
