Is this Starter Ring Gear Still OK?
I am having an issue with the starter grinding and not engaging. It is the OEM starter, on an 86 Carrera w/ a 3.6 Conversion. Worked fine until just recently and seems to be getting worse.
Suspected the ring gear, but it still looks acceptable to my untrained eye, could use opinions here. Starter has been out and appears in working order, didn't get a picture of the drive gear on the starter, but it didn't have much wear. Also suspect a weak battery not putting out full amps. What would people suggest as the min CCA for a 3.6 vram? Keep in mind this is a race car, so not too keen on laying in the 65 lb OEM monster. ![]() ![]()

I assume you rotated the engine and confirmed the other ring gear teeth are intact?
If so, I'd remove the starter and inspect the solenoid and pinion gear linkage. If worn or bent, the gear may not have the same extension as usual. Sherwood |

if you look closely at the pictures you can see a LOT of ground up aluminum filings, looks like maybe the starter shaft might be bent or something like that. not actually a ring or starter gear problem.

The engine was rotated at the time and the rest of the ring gear looks the same as above. We had the starter apart and the shaft looks fine. I think I will have the starter bench checked next and have the battery load tested.

the engine tends to stop in one of three places, so there would be a wear area every third of the way around the ring gear. the teeth get thinner and there is a noticeable burr on the tips.

Ken911, we didn't clean it. The camera flash makes it look very bright. I think what you are seeing is an oily mung/ dirt reflecting to the camera. We didn't find any shavings.

post a pic of the left side of the teeth. you haven't really shown the side that gets worn very well.

John, these are the only pics we took. I'll take more pics of the ring gear and also the starter and post them once we have it apart again.

Those metal specs are normal. It is possible that the throwout solenoid is going bad so it only raises the starter gear a bit of the way up. Start by giving the battery a good deep long charging. Then if that doesn't work, find someone who rebuilds bosch starters and have him rebuild it. The ring gear seems fine unless there is a spot on it that is terrible.

Looks like EarlyPorsche nailed it. Had the starter rebuilt. All is well. Thanks for all the insights and tips above.
