Early Transmission and Clutch w/3.0 Engine?
Would an early clutch and 5 speed transmission stand up to a 3.0 engine if only street driven?

Are you talking about a 901 or a 915?
If you mean a 901, I assume you do. . .If you do NOT put full torque down in first gear, which tends to pull the gear right off the end of the shaft, because it's cantilevered outside the case in the end cover, AND have everything properly rebuilt with the right clearnances and possibly a billet intermediate plate, I would say yes. 915 obviously no problem.

Hi John,
Thanks for the response. Yes, the transmission is the early 901 and the clutch is (I think) a 115mm. They're both in excellent condition and I'd like to keep them if I can. Your mention of a "billet intermediate plate" though, needs a better explanation for my inexperienced brain. Is that some sort of adapter plate? I was under the impression the engine would bolt up without modification and be able to use the exhaust, carburetors (with suitable jets and venturis), flywheel, etc.

Hey Jerry, how are you doing.
Of course you mean 215mm, unless you've been in the Carrera GT parts bin! (The modern Carrera GT, not the four-cam ![]() Anyway, a "billet intermediate plate" is sandwiched in the transmission and carries the main bearings. It prevents the shafts from moving under high load. Here are a few good threads on the subject. Billet gearbox intermediate plate 901 rebuild and upgrades! Now, one thing to watch out for is using a NINE bolt crankshaft from an SC with a SIX bolt flywheel. There are "conversion flywheels" available that allow you to use a cup-shaped flywheel with a 215 mm clutch disc. Here is an interesting recent thread on THAT. Ring Gear on Starter Anyway, there are conversion flywheels out there, try Kennedy engineering if Pelican can't get you one. Good luck!
