Dang! Wrong again!
Sorry for the confusion. His car is a 1975 "S".
I cleaned up the battery posts and cables. His idea of "perfect" and mine are quite different. I sent him out for a new negative cable and installed that. The old one looked like garbage and even had bare wire showing! I cleaned up the ring positive terminals and reinstalled the battery. He'll test drive it later. Meanwhile his turn signal switch is shot. I see one on the site for $157.75 so that's on the list. Here's something strange too, The distributor is missing the small stamped metal plug on the side. Is this just to keep dust and water out? Lee |
The tach would bounce on the 2.7 (also a 1975 911S) that was in my car originally when the distributor point gap got too small, check the points and make sure they are gapped properly.

Thanks Gary. I'll check them.

no 911sc on mine, are you sure you meant US Carrera? |
Interesting. Maybe only the '74 then. Mine has it, and the VIN is c/w a '74 carrera. Confirmed that at least one other '74 does, too

Well, my last post didn't.
Regapping the points seemed to take care of the tach bounce! He said that it has never run better so thanks to all. Next up, replace the points with a magnetic pickup system. |
The tach can also be bad....I think there is a capacitor or some component in there that can cause this problem as well. Best/easiest way is to send it off to North Hollywood Speedometer and they can make it like new for a reasonable price...

Hi Lee,
You might want to look at the Crane Cams optical unit to replace the points, that's what I put in my 2.7, it was fairly inexpensive and easy to install, it worked great. |
Thanks Dennis & Gary. He's getting new tires this weekend since the current ones are weather=checked. We'll see if the tach problem is really gone. I'll look up the Crane unit. I installed a similar unit in the VW I had once upon a time and it was great not messing with points anymore.
