CIS sputtering - cant figure it out
Help! I have a 76 CIS car and it has recently been sputtering at clutch initiation so I have to slip the clutch quite often to get the power at a dead stop. Moreso when it is hot this happens (the car above 140deg). this alspo hapens when I am on the highway in 5th gear traveling at a normal traffic pace (not hard on the gas) it will sputter when I initialy give it more gas for acceleration. I suspect it would do it in any gear if I am just cruizing but I rarely cruise on back roads- Im ususally on and off the gas alot more...
I, and a freind, Rick Cabell, a very experienced re-builder re-built this 82000 mile motor 1 year ago. I have only put 5K miles on it since and it just started recently. CIS is original to the car with same miles. Any help appreciated. thanks. |
This is indicative of a low rpm, high load situation.
Try checking to see that you do not have a small vacuum leak somewhere. Look at all the hoses and joints, especially the airbox to make sure it is not cracked. Then try seeing if the distributor is functioning properly, make sure the vacuum advance/retard is working and that the countereights inside the distributor are not frozen or stuck. If this is not the case then you need to start digging deeper into the fuel system pressures and warm-up regulator diagnosis. Good luck. |
Yeah, my vote would also be to check the distributor and make sure you're getting proper advance,

What is the history on the ignition components?
|
All ignition components except the plugs wires and cap/rotor are original to the car. When I had the engine apart, I used an injector tester/cleaner (pressurized cleaner pushed through the injectors until they spray clean) a Nozlrater (sp) I believe it was...
The car, I forgot to mention sputters and pops at start up I sometimes have to start it more than once. but it idles perfectly after that. runs great when I am on the gas, its the transisiton from light pedal to heavy throttle that makes it sputter and again the same when at a stop light. sputters when i get on it initially unless I slip the clutch a little to get some RPMs. the sputter is very short lived but thoroughly annoying. thanks |
Agree w/ fredmeister and ianc. Check for vac leaks, operation of distrib, and fuel/control pressures (WUR). You cleaned the injectors, but did you check fuel delivery and spray pattern? Also check fuel accumulator and fuel pump check valve. You didn't mention points. If you still have them, I would check the dwell angle.
|
Guys, How does one check the WUR?
Is that in a book? Thnanks Chris |
You need a fuel pressure gauge which you can get from JC Whitney for $60. Do a search here and/or buy the Bentley manual for procedure.
I didn't hear back from you: do you have points? |
