911 smile replacement instructions?
 

I have an '83SC. I had an article on replacing the smile but can't find it now when I need it. While I have the bumper off I'm having it repainted along with the hood. I'm also going to change the valence to a Carrera type.

Removing the bumper shouldn't be a big job but I'm not sure how the front rubber piece comes off of the bumper. Someone told me it's bolted on from the back of the bumper but I thought the bolts to get the bumper off were behind the rubber piece.

Appreciate any help.

Also, where is a good source for the smile and chin spoiler?

The smile bolts from the trunk. Put it on and leave loose. Adjust to fit.

Now for another question. Is there a way, by possibly removing the bumper shocks, to make the bumper fit to the fender and eliminate the belows?

Just my bloody luck: I have kept every Excellence I've received since 1997. Today was the day I set aside to remove my bumper for some paint work and a smile replacement.

I found this post and saw the scans from the August 1999 issue. Went to my bookshelf and what do you know? That particular issue is MISSING.

So thank you for posting the scan. Doubly :-).

I plan on taking lots of pics as I do it and will post them to this thread...

How many philips head screws and speed-nuts are there for the rubber smile?
The PET picture shows 12 locations (4-per side, 4 across front). The actual part matches that diagram.
However, the PET part reference says 10 total. And, on disassembly, I only had 10 (3 per side, 4 middle).
I -think- the one closest to the bumper shock was missing.

I'm reassembling now, and am just trying to get clarity on this. I'm actually not sure what I took out, except I'm pretty certain it was only 3 per side.

Update: Never mind. I had misplaced 2 of them. I had a total of 12. Still not sure why the PET lists only 10.
