Porsche/Forum Newbie

Hi!

I recently purchased a 1987 911 Carrera from a friend. Classic story...new wife, didn't understand why you would own a car that you didn't drive every day. So, her attitude was my gain. Car has 115K miles. I've had it for 5 weeks and have fallen in love with it. My first Porsche.

I grew up in the 60's around friends who were serious drag racers. I have always loved cars. I wrote my high school English research paper on Roll-Royce. Topic had to be British! I got into Harleys, starting with a '57 Pan, then a '95 FLHT, then an 86 FLHS stroker. Five years ago last month a car pulled in front of the FLHS and I ended up with every bone in my left leg broken. After a long recovery, I got a V-Rod trike. The beginning of the Porsche connection. At the end of July, I heard that the 911 was for sale, sold the V-Rod and here I am on this forum. I look forward to lots of help from all the collective wisdom here.

I'm mechanically challenged, but have a friend who can help with basic maintenance. Labor Day is going to be just that. It's Porsche Project Day for the two of us. Driver's door seal and threshold, hood and trunk shocks, minor electrical things.

I taught high school English for 28 years and retired two years ago. Retirement is extra sweet behind the wheel of my 911.

JT Toy

I've posted a few pics. Look for "Pics...I hope" post Thanks, jt

Welcome! I am sure you will enjoy the car, but we can't without pics! Forum rules dude... gotta post them...

I am south of you in Jackson, TN. My company just bought another power plant there in Calvert City, and I may have to travel there from time to time. Maybe I will see you on the road.

And, if you enjoy driving, you are close enough (2 hours?) to us to join us on our MTFR's (Mid TN Fun Runs). We generally drive somewhere between Nashville and Memphis, but this next one on Saturday (9/15), might be in the Reelfoot lake area. If you are interested, shoot me an email and I will add you to our growing email dist list.

Now, pictures???

Welcome and congratulations from a fellow teacher. That passion you feel for your Porsche, be warned, it will only grow stronger. My "relationship" with the '72 seems to grow stronger everyday...

Quiet (sic) true.

'87 is a good year, IMO. Others have their favorites. I have owned a ' 71 S, a '77 Targa and 2 914's, not to mention the 356. And I have a Boxster. I think that covers a few bases. So, please post a pic of your '87 and welcome.

BTW, there are a LOT of Carrera specific threads here. I think it's a very popular car at Pelican whereas the later 993's> get a lot of write up on Rennlist.

Welcome and Congratulations!

Highly recommend Wayne's 101 projects book and the Bentley Carrera manual. Those will get you through most DIY projects.

Thanks all for the warm welcome, especially v8_ranch in Jackson. I will be in touch about regional events and would look forward to becoming involved.

I ususally stay mute on forums re: grammar and punctuation etc. I am the world's worst typist. Most of the kids I taught in western Kentucky thought English was a second language.

Most Important! I may know a dangling participle from a double negative, but I'm not worth much when it comes to computers. Being retired and having plenty of time, , I'll snap some pics of the '87 today and maybe get some help from forum threads on getting pics up soon.

Lally911, I bought 101 Projects immediately.. Thanks for the heads up on Bentley Carrera!

I look forward to the resources and personalities this forum provides.

Welcome to this fabulous forum, JT! There is a wealth of knowledge within this forum; the secret is to use the "Search" function. You'll accumulate questions as you gain familiarity with your car, and almost every one of those future questions has been discussed and answered on this forum.

BTW it's good to have a fellow English teacher on board.
