Power Window Motor/Regulator Questions
 

All I can say is WTF??? Is this installation correct?

I've been doing some work on the doors on my 86 and "discovered" something intersting (to me, at least.)

The motor for the driver's side door is securely tucked inside the shell of the door. You actually have to peek around a bit to see it.

The passenger's side motor, well...not so much.

Looking at the pics in Wayne's "101 Projects" book, it only shows the driver's side, which looks similar to the pic above. No pics for the passenger side though.

The passenger's side has never worked for as long as I've had the car. My guess is that it's because the bolts that hold the regulator are MIA!!!

Shouldn't the motor be mounted up inside the door, just like the driver's side motor? :confused:

I'd agree - WTF??! Somebody's jacked up that passenger door. Your passenger door is...missing the regulator?! Where is the glass?

I just replaced both window motors. Yes the motors are (supposed to be) behind the front door sheet metal. After removing the 4 bolts (missing on the pass side), you can rotate the regulator to expose 2 of the 3 bolts holding the motor. I has to use a wrench, at an odd, painful angle, to reach the last bolt. It helps to disconnect the regulator from the glass. I used some large clamps to hold the glass in the "up" position - out of harms way.

John, thanks for the input! I just can't believe it with this car. It seems that every time I get one things resolved, 4 or 5 more appear. :(

Fortunately, the glass is still in place, as well as the regulator. It's just hooked up totally whacked. When I said earlier that it hasn't worked, that was 100% true. It will actually try to go down, but only makes it an inch or so...unless the door is closed, then it just won't budge.

I'll be tearing into it soon enough. Thanks for the info!

Not only is the motor not bolted in but the bottom part of the scissors arm isn't bolted to the door either. It should go in those two holes right above the armrest cover. Someone must have tried to deal with a window problem and just gave up part way through the job.

When you do get around to doing the job my own recent experience with trying to wrangle this part around causes me to recommend that you plan on taking out the window frame to give yourself manuvering room.

Say, Randy -- will you have time to toss a motor onto a postal scale during your repairs?

First of all, when I'm wrong, I go all the way. It was obvious in the pics, it was metnioned by j_mancini, and yet I refused to believe it. The Porsche window regulator is GONE!!! :eek:

Instead, there is this big brass loop kinda thing that seems to contain some sort of cable or whatever, for moving the window up or down. The actual regulator provided by Porsche during the manufacture of this car is long gone.

A closer examination of the motor in the door reveals some even more bizarre data... While it does say Bosch on the motor, the part number stamped on it is FPE 12V 0130821069. When I Googled that number, most of the links pointed to pages regarding a TVR Chimarea.

I understand parts like this motor can be, and are often, interchangeable with other vehicles, but when I Googled the Part No and "Porsche", there were no results to display

Okay, three bolts later and the motor is removed. Here is where it mounts onto the "loop" assembly.

It looks like, for the aft part of the loopy-thingy, they drilled a hole in the bottom of the door and attached the loopy-thingy using a single bolt. The other end of the loopy-thingy, which also lives in the bottom of the door, had this red plastic hose clammped to it. WTF, over??? :eek:

I feel your pain! Its not "one thing leads to another", it's "one thing becomes 5 or 6 more things"!

That motor doesn't look like the one I put in my door. Check the parts diagram on Pelican and you'll see what it should look like. There is also a bolt missing from the window frame - that hole just to the rear of the speaker hole. I found it mounts the lower corner of the window frame. Is the frame missing (?)...

Is the latch pull missing as well? Not much left in that door!

Ok, now it's obvious. Someone has jury-rigged your door. That is not a Porsche regulator. Here's what it should look like:

Mine was the circled one (2-arm), later style is the other one, with an extra mounting arm.

My guess is someone amazingly tried to improvise a window lift in your door, who knows where that came from!

John, I've got no doubt that the regulator is not originally from a 911, or any Porsche that I could find. In fact, when I Google the entire part number for the motor, it turns up as a Power Window Motor for a TVR Chimaera.

Randy, was there something in particular you had in mind with regard to weighing the motor?

I just want to find out if the cars with elec. lifts weighed less than the ones with manual cranks. You wouldn't think so, but there is a persistent rumor (urban myth?) that the ones with elec. motors actually weighed less. Some have claimed that the internal components were changed for cars with motors and that the changes more than compensated for the wt. of the motor.



If you toss the motor on a postal or UPS scale - and any other components that seem different, like the scissors mechanism - that you care to take the trouble over, that would be great! Thanks!

PS -- I wonder if the TVR part is worth any money?? You sure deserve it after this...

Well, even though I really want to get this fixed before winter gets here, I'm not really sure I'll be able to. I've got a phone number or two for local used-parts houses. Hopefully someone will have what I'm looking for.

If it turns out the TVR mechanism weighs in a lot less than the standard Porsche equipment, maybe we can cut a deal! ;) I have it on good authority that it's hardly been used at all! :D

When I finally get ahold of the correct parts, I'll see about weighing them in and will provide that data to you.

if you are up-grading to a 3 arm regulator the glass bottom metal mount may have to be re-adjusted fore & aft. Although i replaced mine i don't remember if it is a different part number.

also, upon re-assembly, there is a glass in/out adjustment and the top bolt on the door sheet metal tightens it in position.

Now is a good time to add beeper auto locks in sync w/an alarm.

hand slam the sheet metal and listen for rattles.

a 2'x2' sheet of Dynamat or similar on the outside panel will deaden the door closing noise.

i cleaned the inner lower area of dirt and rust at the seams etc, soaked it in white vinegar, hosed it clean, and used Por-15 to seal it up the sides a couple of inches.

use plastic sheet to reseal door before mounting panel.

Now is a good time to cut for 6.5" door speakers. Threaded rivets work great for speaker install instead of sheet metal screws.

I'll have you know that we're extremely proud of the entire half-inch of annual snow fall we receive here in Georgia! Sometimes it will all fall during a single "blizzard" and will actually force the shut down of schools, mass transit lines, and even cause shortages of kerosene, bread and water at all the major grocery chains!:D

Yup - actually, I got stuck in one such Georgia blizzard about 10 years ago. I was near Savannah, and the locals couldn't understand why I wanted to be closer to the storm.
