Custom Turbo Set-ups
 

Hey,

I've been trying to search and find people who have taken on this task in the past. I am currently doing another custom turbo build on my M3, and have given thoughts to it on my 964, as a possibile future project.

I am sure there has to have been some done out there before, but I am wondering if anyone on here has done it before, or if they know any place with documentations on such a project.

I've just been curious :)

Talk to Ben from M&K Exhaust he makes a turbo set up for Carreras (if I remember correctly) and he is a real nice guy. He may be a great help.

Don, I would be interested as well to what you find turbo wise. Has anyone any supercharger experience on the 964 motor?

This 964 is turbocharged. Maybe someone knows who it belongs to.

Have done several home made turbo installations. They are not difficult but you have to stay low on boost if you are not lowering compressions.

My last one lasted over 200,000 miles before the car was totalled in a non-speed related accident.

I am personally partial to turbos, due to the potential that they have, and I feel that after supercharging it, I'll be left earning for even more power.

I am not looking at making some rediculous amount of power, but at the same time, I think turbo will get me to where I would be comfortable. Plus, having a custom set up, I will be able to build it to be as daily driveable as possible, with as little lag as I can.

Hopefully more people can chime in.

So far, hardest part would be sourcing out some turbo headers.

Intercooler piping shouldn't be too bad, since everything is so close together in the engine bay area.

Exhaust/wastegate also should be easy, since the engine is in the rear already, etc.

I know, I use easily a lot, but I don't literally mean that it will be a walk in the park, but these small details make it easier than some other cars out there.

What car/engine were you boosting?

I guess another good question would be, how much these engines can take on a stock head gasket, and if there are any aftermarket headgaskets out there (IE cometic).

They never built a turbo M3, so you need to do something custom if you want a turbo car. Porsche, on the other hand, built many generations of turbo motors that will bolt into a 964. The factory motors have numerous subtle modifications to handle the extra power, and you can take your pick from a 3.3l single turbo to a 3.6l twin turbo depending on budget... And if the stock ~400 hp street motors don't float your boat, you can buy factory parts to re-create 600+ hp GT2 Evos. Given that the stock 964 motors is worth a decent amount used and building a well desgned turbo system isn't cheap, a motor swap is the first rout I'd suggest you look into...

The car belongs to LARennsport who posts here and on the Rennlist. The car has a 993 turbo engine and was NOT a budget constrained conversion. It was for sale in the low $60s last I heard.

FVD and RUF will turbo a 964. actually the 964 makes the most sense to turbo. knock sensors twin plug FI. I would also contact imagine auto - they seem to be the best at extracting the most hp.
