new built up 16 X 9s from True Design Wheels
 

Today, I picked up my new track wheels built by True Design Wheels in Arvada, Colorado (www.trudesignwheel.net). I provided two 16 "donor Fuchs for the process (a 6 and 7). These guys are real craftsmen and great to work with. The weld join beads are simply beautiful. For a set of 16 X 9s, polished and painted, I paid a very reasonable price (< $800) for their creation. I purchased the donor wheels over the winter here on Pelican and on Craigslist for about $125 a piece. A happy customer and these guys are highly recommended. Grady approved.
If you need a set of 9s guys, there is viable alternative to paying $2K. YMMV

if my math is correct, you have an investment of $1050 into the wheels not counting shipping?? Damn nice work.

So how many wheels do they need to make a 16x9? I have a set of 16x6's, is that all I need to send them? Where do they get the extra material?

Generally 6s are used for 3 piece wheels, the back of the 6s is used on 7s to make yp the 9s.

6s and 7s would be 13s not 9s?

When they did mine I sent 2 16x6's and got back 2 16x9.5's:D

Well, you are wrong, you only add in inside of the 6 to the 7, not 7+6.

When they did mine it looked like they dropped the center into a new one piece outer and welded it in.

That is the backs added to the front, Gary Stratton (Sonjay here) has been building those for years, also I know some one else who has been doing the 3 piece Fuchs and has a small stock pile of inner & outer lips from the 6s that he is just sitting on, I'm pretty sure I can get him to come off of some if there is an interest:D

Jim does great work. He simply polished my 7"/ 8" set and powder coated the centers. They are perfect.

Those 9s are really nice, but what about tire availability? The widest I see available is a 245/45. With 9s you could easily run 255s or even 265s.

I will be running 245/45 Toyo RA1 on these rims for my PCA race car. I could go wider but that is where I am starting. Sure the selection is limited now on 16" tires. I am happy how I got the wheel size I needed rather than paying the going rate for OEM 16X9 Fuchs.

I have used True Design (Jim) before when I bent a set of custom made (1 off) Boyds wheels and they were great to deal with! Real craftsmen!

On reliability, yes I certainly hope so. Welds are normally stronger than the metal they bond. Jim (True Design Wheel) said yesterday the rims are ~90% as strong as the original Fuch rim. The barrel is not forged but made from a billet alumium alloy. He gave me no warranty as I am taking these wheels racing but he told me straight up, he never has had any problems in many years he has been making them. You guys will be the first to know (after Jim) if I do have problems, I promise. YMMV
