Which shift coupler do you prefer, and why?

I just purchased a Rennshift for my 915 box. Woo hoo! :D

I was thinking that "while I'm in there" I'd replace the stock coupler, so I thought I'd post a poll to see which coupler people like, and why.

Please vote and give me your comments.

Thanks!

Scott,
I just replaced the stock coupler with a WEVO on my SC. If you could put your hands on a WEVO and compare it to the stock, you can see and feel a huge difference. I know I will never have to replace the WEVO. If you drive your car a lot, you will have to eventually replace the stock coupler.

I recently put both the Rennshifter and the WEVO coupler on my 73 915 box; along with new bushings.
It is a totally different experience, I now shift with confidence 100% of the time, and know EXACTLY which gear the lever is headed for ALL the time.
NEVER nick reverse any longer either...:)

I doubt your going to get any head to head comparisons of the Wevo and Stromski, this is the kind of part you replace once and forget about. Both use off the shelf universal joints and I'm sure either will get the job done.

The reason I voted for the Wevo is just becuase it lacks that addtional sleeve the Stomski has. Why add wieght :D

I think they are both pretty much the same.

I would hazard a guess that if you just replace all your worn bushings and coupler with OEM parts you will no longer have shifting problems. That is what I did and maybe I am just lucky but my 915 w/143,000 miles shifts just fine.

Bill: Do you think the Rennshift made the biggest difference? I guess what I'm trying ask is whether the Rennshift would have been enough, or is the Wevo coupler really necessary to get that "different experience" you've described?

I'm not Bill, but I know a little bit about the RennShift ;).

You do not want a sloppy coupler with the RennShift. My personal preference is a u-joint coupler, followed by the round-hole plastic bushings in the stock coupler.

Well, I am Bill, and I probably agree with James Adams..:D (Thanks for the WONDERFUL shifter James.

I would love to be able to answer your question objectively, but as I changed everything at one time, including the very worn bushing in the tunnel, I really can't say what the contributing percenatges are.

This is probably an echo of what James just said but what I have found is: the Rennshift is an Incredibly precise unit, with just enough free play in each gate area to prevent any possibility of binding, but with just enough spring load in each "row" to leave no doubt where you are at any moment.

To try to use this with a sloppy coupler, or worn bushings would be a great injustice, to say the least. I suppose that worn parts between the shifter and the shift rod would make for some frustrating inconsistencies in shiftability with this unit, given the precise gate definition. But I am just supposing, as I said.

My shifting is as near to perfect as a 915 can achieve, IMO...

The factory shift coupler has elongated holes for play...eliminate those with either the expensive aftermarket couplers or install 914 round bushings in your factory coupler. It makes a world of difference.

Oh, and I'm looking forward to the day I install the Rennshift in my '73!

(Whoops, I just noticed James said pretty much the same thing)
