Oil around fan housing

I know everyone is always chasing around oil leaks, so this may be redundant,
sorry. My 84 always seems slimed in the fan housing with fresh oil. Im not sure where it is coming from, the car has 75 thousand miles and the engine has never been opened to my knowledge. It coats the inside of the housing, not bad but disconcerting. Matches my other leaks. It does seem to be getting a bit worse

Is the engine tin around the bumper area showing oil? That's a weird one.

Any chance you can get a pic? How are the fan blades - clean/oily?

Ahh. There are two points of failure that I can think of. One requires a rebuild, the other is a simple o-ring. If the leak is at the crank shaft - bearing #8, well...

If the leak is coming from the intermediate shaft, you can replace the o-ring and that should solve your problem. I don't think you need to drop the engine, but it would need to be supported. The cross member and engine bracket need to be removed.

Dave

Here's a pic of the simple way out...

That area was really grimy. you may need to try and clean it before determining where the leak is from. I hope it is from the easy fix. Good luck.

Dave

Oh yeah, you will need to remove the muffler! PB blaster needs to be on hand! Maybe order up the three bolts and nuts for the muffler to cat and a new gasket as well.
