Porsche Organ Donor Program?

I was thinking about this on Sunday while installing a pressure limiting valve and lines purchased from a fellow Pelican Bcketner. Great guy to deal with btw.

It's one of many smaller projects I've done with parts donated (actually bought in most cases) from fellow Pelicans. Maybe this is more of a black market organ harvesting purchase program?

How many lives have been saved or improved with reused parts from other cars???? How many more can we save in the future. Maybe get a former celebrity spokesperson to do a public service announcement. What's the environmental benefit of keeping these older cars running and out of landfills?

Sorry, just rambling?

I do appreciate the help and parts received here. Couldn't learn what I've learned or do the projects I've done without this resource. Now I'll get to try my new and improved brakes at the track on Thursday. Have a good one and if you've got any heartwarming organ donor stories, post them up.

Pick of donated part:

Jerry,

Many (most) of the used replacement parts on my car have come from Pelicans. Most of the new parts have also been purchased here. I try to "give back" whenever possible by selling good parts for a very reasonable price to other Pelicans. My car wouldn't be on the road today without the kind folks here!

- about 1/3 to 2/3 of the the total pollution generated by a car is from its manufacture, not from running it...

RWebb,

That's a very telling statistic, which I would like to quote from time to time. Do you have a source or any documentation for it?

I mentioned the environmental benefit a little tongue in cheek, but only a little. Unfortunately most of the reading I've done compares buying a new fuel efficient car like a Prius and the cost to manufacture that car and how long it would take to "pay back" that investment vs. continuing to drive an older less fuel efficient car.

I have not seen (have also not done a lot of research) anything that looks at the life cycle of say running a 911 for 30 years and maintaining it vs. buying a new car every 4-6 years. Looking at fuel costs to run vs. costs to manufacture and then dispose of. What's going to happen to all of these newer fancy computer driven cars at the end of their 10 year or so life cycle when many of their components are simply too expensive to replace and many can't be rebuilt (non serviceable transmissions for example)????

Also, keeping these old cars alive keeps guys like John Walker out of trouble

I saw it somewhere at one of the think tank type enviro org's -- either edf or nrdc -- they both have web sites. Also, the Sierra Club has some sort of feature where you can ask questions and they will get back with an answer.

Recognize that it will vary quite a bit. For one thing, it is based on data before hybrid cars were available, and also before car companies began trying to do much in the way of 'green' manf. and plants. IIRC, Subaru has advertised the first 'green' manf. plant.

Porsche has always been in the forefront of efficiency and low-impact cars. If you think about it, the company's entire history (ok, not the 917) has been one of using small, lighter cars to kill giant 12 cylinder-engined cars, usually ones painted a nasty, loud red color...

There are some details on environmentalism at and by Porsche in both of Aichle's books.
