How to lift the 911

I am sure this a duplicate, but the search feature is giving me an error so…

I just got a scissor lift and want to be sure I lift the car right, any suggestions & links on where to lift my car?

Thanks!

Different year cars lift optimally in different places. Later cars have reinforcements at the 4 corners of the pan. You could easily crush the pinch seam on a somewhat rusty early 911 with a lift.

Carter, this thread has some pics that might be helpful: Souk’s Ramps for Scissors Lift

I have the same lift that Souk (the author of the above thread) has. Basically, you want to position your lift arms at areas where the underbody is strongly supported at reinforced intersections. I go for the front floorpan corners (being mindful of oil and A/C lines) and in the back the area similar to Souk's pics.

I use hockey pucks on top of the pads to get the lift points just right. Go slowly at first by checking where everything is at just before the car starts going up. Check it again after you start taking the weight of the car on. After confirming everything once again, take it on up.

Enjoy the lift. You're wrenching professionally now.

Brian

Thanks for the info! I have an 81, but no rust, so I don’t foresee any structural issues. I bought a Bend-Pak MD-6XP, and can’t wait to get under the car.

I'm pretty sure it is 48 inches without the little lift extentions.

I guess that depends on who you talk to!! If you talk to the gov’t I’m a rich guy and they help themselves to my wallet. If you talk to my wife, we are poor folk who can’t afford any more go fast parts! Maybe somewhere in between, life isn’t bad, you make the call.

I don’t have the $$ to spend on a lift for every bay of my garage though!

How much later? I've got a solid '82 Targa and I'm always leary of jacking anywhere other than the obvious points on the suspension. (I've replaced too many VW floor pans for people who destroyed them via the factory jack points.) Got a diagram?
