Can't comment about the codes, I'm at work. It is a 3.0 though, 3.2 started in 1984.

engine could be a later model than the chassis so dont let the chassis year influence your comments

Here you go:
911 = 911
8=1978
3=911SC RoW and Japan
1=Targa
0207 production sequence

It is a RoW Sc with an engine type # 930/05 3.0 liter engine, 180 hp and 175 ft lbs.
I don't have ROW engine numbers. Can't explain the targa/coupe numbers but you might double check that you haven't copied them down incorrectly: ie: 9118301207. Then you'd have a coupe.
Check the number in the trunk by the smugglers box as well for a match.

thanks Tony that was my first thought that I had the numbers down incorrectly which would explain the targa / coupe mix up.

With regard to engine, did you base you findings on chassis no which would mean this is what the car left factory with ie: 3.0l

I think this car has had an engine transplant as the owner seems to think it has a 3.2l motor but he could be wrong, like me he has limited knowlegde, any easy way to tell the difference

According to the Red Book: 9118310001-9118311729 = 911SC Targa RoW, engine #6380001-on (930/03) 911SC RoW, all model year 1978.

post a pic of the engine. The 3.2's had a different induction system than the 3.0's. They use a motronic electronic injection rather than a CIS or continual Injection System. The intakes should tell something. It is possible that the original 3.0 motor has been built into a 3.2 with the original CIS injection, but no visual way that I know of to tell that.
