Looking good. Two questions: The turn signals look like they are crooked, is this an optical illusion? Wouldn't it look more correct to lose the rear reflector and have the bumper extend up to closer match the pre-74 rear end?

I'm not doing a conventional backdate. The front lights angle down a bit, yes. That's how it works.

Edit and PS: The original idea was to NOT lose the reflector. I'm combining the best of the '73 Carrera RS and the '93 Carrera RS (Euro only).

Hey Milt, I'm thinking of getting a C2 rear deck/spoiler because Ducks are getting so common. Are you going to have AC and where do you put the condenser with the moving spoiler? Are you going to have a manual switch to extend/retract. I like your project, it's very original and unorthodox, takes guts. Thanks, Scott

Wow, they look great, the angle of the lines on the rear match up perfect with the wheel wells and the angle of the deck lid lines.

A_W_E_S_O_M_E! Milt, totally awesome! That backend is competely gorgeous. I hope you will provide some more details at some point. I would love to have a similar look on mine someday. The front looks great too, although I have to agree that if the front signal lights were tweaked down a bit on the rear, it would look better with the bumper in white... meaning, perhaps when it is painted to match the rest of the car, the optical scene there will play out better.

I love what you have done. I said it in your earlier post and I'll say it again if you happen to make two of anything please let me know.

This is just an idea and not a criticism of what you have done, but what would you think of putting 911R style lights on the front instead of the early turn signal housings? I only ask because it might a lot cheaper to go that route than the full on turn signal housing method.

I think the rear wheel well unit and the modified front unit together will handle the condensing aspect of the a/c. I will have a manual switch for the lid.


V8, it's hard taking pics of a car and make them look in the perspective we see with our eyes. Pros get back a hundred feet and use a long lens. I can't do that. The turn lights are level with the ground viewed from the side. They match the car's lines fairly well viewed from the front, but I'm going to make an adjustment there.

I have completely cut apart and re-glassed the light enclosures 3 times trying to get it exactly right. This stuff is not easy. However, this is the first time even I have seen the bumpers together mounted on their own with no support. So, I have the scheme now to finalize the design, adjusting the lights, cut the "horn grilles" and finish off the front opening.

Probably take another week before primer. That will be about 5 weeks of part time work on a daily basis. At least 100 hours so far on the front alone.

So, Randy, if someone wants to copy me, I'd be flattered. This bumper will NOT be reproduced for sale, so they will have to do as much work as I have. :) I may produce portions such as the lower valance to be added to an impact bumper car, '74- '89. The liability of making whole bumpers in this society is too risky for me. It would take just one fool who had an accident to ruin my life if he went to a lawyer.

Nice job! I really like the rear look. I wonder if it might look "better" not saying it looks bad at all, If the intersection/ transition of bump outs on the bumpers lined up with the right and left side of the rear reflector and deck lid lines? Just a thought.

I looked at that again just now. The inside radii do line up with the lid/reflector as much as a soft line can line up with a hard one. BUT, one side is slightly off and I might not have caught that this time around. Thanks for the observation!

BTW, one finds out a lot about their car and the factory tolerances when doing something like this. There's probably good reason why there are things like think gaskets and the smile. :) My parts are hard mounted to the sheet metal at this point with no cushion for a transition. You can easily see small misalignments on things like the rear reflector and the tail lights.

In all actuality, I don't think I've ever seen two <'73 911's with the exact same line up of turn lights to fenders. Same goes for the rear lights. Some show a little more rubber than others and some are just awful. It's like there are no two cars alike, which I've heard many say is true.

If I were using a half inch think front bumper to body gasket like the <'73, it would cover a multitude of sins. ;)

Well, off to get the angle grinder out (again) and suit up so I don't itch like a mad man. Tip: Wear long sleeves and gauntlet type rubber gloves and spray laundry starch all over your clothing. Tape up sleeves and neck. Go to work while the starch is still damp. Wear it once and wash. I go through a couple sets of clothes a day doing this, even if I only work 3 hours.

Oh yeah, and ice cold showers. You don't want to sweat and you don't want your pores to open up until you've used something like a shampoo on your whole body. Then you can turn on the warm water.

Fun stuff, huh?

Just before I unbolt everything, here is one more shot with a piece of tape as a reference showing the compound radii at the leading edge. I didn't want anyone the think I copied my wife's Boxster. ;)

Just wanted to take a quick moment to make sure you knew how much I admire your work here. Makes me wish I was half as good. The comments about the lights on front end earlier were more of me thinking "out loud on paper", so to speak. I understand what you mean about the camera distortion.

This really is a work of art in my opinion. I cannot wait to see the next round of progress.
