Help! H1 Adjuster Removal 2

Apparently there is a trick to loading 2 photos which I have yet to learn. Anyway, I hope someone can tell me how to remove the flex line adjuster from the chrome trim ring on an H1.

rename to a short file name like aH1.jpg - be sure size < ~ 1 Mbyte & retry

I'm not sure how to separate the pieces in order to remove, but maybe this pic of the part (which I think you're trying to show) will help. Also, it appears that the photo upload feature will now take up to a 2 MB file.
Good luck

Hi Bob,
Many thanks. You definitely have the part in your photo. My parts are original and have seen better days but the problem remains. Perhaps someone else can tell how the flex cable separates.
Jerry

I don't think it does. ....

If you can't get an answer here - search the Early 911S bbs - somebody posted info on the H1s there a few weeks ago - might help you.

And -- be careful. I assume you know how much those puppies are worth...

Hi Randy,
Thanks for the post. I've looked through all the forums and don't see one for "Early 911S". Could you point me in the right direction please?
Thanks,
Jerry

Solved! It came apart as I thought it should initially. The coupling between the flex cable and the screw is crimped around the cable and threaded to accept the screw. I had a second piece I tried to take apart but the screw snapped off so I was looking for help. This morning, I tried heat, quench and penetrating oil and it broke loose.

That's great news, Jerry! I've wondered if that coupling could be taken apart. Did you just unscrew it once it broke free? Can you post pictures of the parts?

I'd love to Bob but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to post a photo in this reply sequence. There must be a way, as others seem to do so without much effort but I haven't found the secret. At best, I can only post one photo with a "Post New Topic". Sure would love to know how to "go around" the system but nearing 70 yrs. of age, I might not last that long.

You can do it too, Jerry. Just scroll down after the last post and click "post reply". Then on the next screen that takes you to, look below the box that you type your message into and see the phrase "Click here to Upload a Photo...". Now, click on that and then browse for the picture file you want and upload it. When you upload a picture (has to be less than 2 megabytes) wait until it takes you back to the screen that you are typing your message into; you'll see the filename you uploaded there. Now if you want, you can scroll down and "Click here to Upload a Photo..." again and again, to put multiple pictures in your post, then click "submit reply" when you're done. Try Randy's suggestion too, of renaming you picture file to a shorter filename.

Hope this helps,

Ahah! Thanks 74 carrera!

When I replied, I automatically went to the box which is labeled "Quick Response". Now I see how it's done.
Anyway, hopefully, here's a couple of photos. The problem was in trying to get the flex cable off of the trim ring. The only way I could see was to unscrew the adjuster from the coupling. I had an old part that I tried to get loose first and it snapped off so I wondered if there was a trick to it, or if it came apart at all. Anyway, as explained above, heating, quenching and penetrating oil got the job done. Both the joint and the screw are brass so the screw is very easy to break.

can you cut out and post the last screen before you send the photo?

or describe what it looks like?

It's great that you could get the coupling off the screw!

Nope. I open the "add a photo" box, go to browse, highlight the photo (and it's only 33K, and it's a .jpeg) hit upload, then submit. All I get is what you see above. What am I doing wrong?

One of my adjuster screws is stripped. I may try this process to disassemble. But, what to replace it with? A S/S screw?

Hi Ed,

I think SS would be your best choice. Hella used plated brass but I doubt you'd find any at the local hardware store. Zinc or cadmium plated steel would probably be OK too but I'd do my best to protect it against corrosion. SS would also be the strongest against twisting off with the steel second and the brass a poor third. I wrote to the US Hella office looking for some parts and answers but never got an answer so I don't think they would be a source. I have an excellent industrial fastener house nearby and they don't carry the extra long screws in stock but could probably get some if asked. Very likely a minimum order though.

Good luck.

Jerry
