'74 911/912 chrome side mirror on eBay

Hi all;

Just won this side view mirror on eBay;

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230163204077&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:AU:12

It appears to be a right hand side mirror (US passenger side), yes?

Is there any way to distinguish whether it is a Porsche original, or a repro?

(I emailed the seller with these questions a few days ago, but never received a reply...)

Thanks in advance!

Peter,

Porsche didn't put passenger side mirrors on their '74 Carreras, it gave an assymetrical look to the car, which I liked. Having said that, I purchased (un-beknownst to me) a reproduction mirror, for the driver's side... I still have the original. On the bottom of the original mirror, thus hidden from view there is a stamping "el 17017 and inside the base, where the screw type mounting studs are is the letter R.

Hope that helps!

T.G

Thanks T.G.;

I understand that Porsche didn't have passenger side mirrors in 1974, but right hand side mirrors were fitted in right-hand drive markets, such as in the UK, and here in Australia.

I suspect that the above mirror will turn out to be a repro, but will check for the markings as you have described when it arrives.

Many thanks!

UPDATE:

Received the mirror last week from the USA;

A couple of interesting things;

1. It is a right sided mirror (US passenger side)

2. It has the exact markings that T.G. described above - "el 17017" on the mirror housing, and an 'R' inside of the base

If this is a repro, they've certainly gone to a lot of trouble to reproduce the factory markings.

Otherwise, it might well be a (rare) genuine Porsche mirror from a right-hand drive market?

If so, an odd item to acquire from US eBay...

Not sure you would call it rare, they were installed on all right hand drive cars.

Nice price BTW
