Short shift throw

Can anyone with a short shift setup tell me the distance at the shift knob from gear to gear? Or anyone who knows for sure that they don't have one? I know there have been several upgrades / mods on my car by po's, so I just want to check before I plunk down the money for one.

Thanks,
Steve.

I'm not at my car at the moment but my '89 Silver Anniversary 3.2 Coupe came with a factory short shift kit installed.

I'm thinking that the throws are about 3.5" from neutral. In any case they are nice and crisp and just about the right throw distance.

Mine is about 4 1/2" from gear to gear so I'm going to assume that it already has a kit installed.

Thanks,
Steve.

Go to the bottom of this page for a dimension.

Extrapolating the numbers, it looks like about 5.25" gear to gear with a factory short shifter.

Steve,
Your gear-to-gear measurement of 4.5" indicates you might have a Weltmeister short shifter installed. A spacer (approx. 1/4" thick) under the shift housing is the giveaway. Either that, or the PO shortened the lever. BTW, the WM shift lever is also shorter than the factory levers (standard or short shift).

A. Factory standard
B. Factory short shift
C. WM short shift

umm... looking at the pics Sherwood posted, the shorter the shifter is, the further the knob will be away from the driver seat. I think on 911, the stock shifter is already too far from the seat. I always hope it can be closer.

The lever is only steel. With the right amount of heat, you can reshape it. A shorter lever or a shorter throw will decrease the distance the lever moves away from the seat.

sounds great. I can just tke my stock lever out, heat it up, and bend it a little more angle to make have the knob closer to the seat?

Intense heat is non-descriminatory. Be careful.

Thanks Sherwood, I do have the spacer under the housing so clears it up for me.

Steve.
