Price goes up at 2 a.m.

So, I am putting an order together for a few parts. I am waiting for a call back from my paint guy before I order this morning. I go to order and notice that the price went up from $67.50 to $81.00/ each for two items I need. I just called Pelican and sure enough, the price was increased at 2 am this morning. Not angry with Pelican, just sad.

I am not sure what the moral of the story is...either don't hesitate to order, or push your paint guy for information ASAP.

I know this will not be popular, but I can get the same item from another well-known parts supplier in Europe for the price Pelican had it for sale yesterday.

Not sure what I am going to do.

***Just venting. Not venting about Pelican, just venting at my loss.***

I don't have any experience doing it, but I do think I have heard that pelican will match a competitor at times.

Clearly Bernanke is not watching the parts values on pelican when he says there is no inflation.

I guess you have to look at the extra $27.00 as an investment in keeping this fantastic site operational.

Well it's not like those parts are an iPhone.

. .. tho, I am going to ask Wayne to lower that price to $54 After you buy it. (you'll think he's a god)

Maybe get on the horn and dicker. It's your right as an owner of a car that "won't need to be repaired" anyway.

Happy hour is over!

I did call Pelican, but they did not offer to match the other price. In all fairness, I didn't ask either.

We get different real-time datafeeds each day, and the prices are updated over night according to the current prices from our suppliers. It's all done with Just In Time inventory, so very often, price increases (and decreases) are put into place sooner than some of our competitors who happen to stock a lot more product. Unfortunately, the dollar and our exchange rate with the Euro has taken a beating over the past several years, and I estimate that it will only get worse. This will inevitably lead to higher prices for all European products (probably about 90% of what we sell).

If you want us to adjust the pricing on an individual product that had an overnight price increase, then let me know the day after, and we might be able to still get the old price with our current supplier.

Well, I guess it is too late now. Today is the day after, so tomorrow will be a day too late.

Again, not blaming Pelican.

I wonder what happened to increase the price on a product by 20% overnight? Merely the weak dollar?

Supplier buys qty 100 at $100. Those last 3 months. 3 months later, the dollar is weaker, the producer's costs increased, etc., so the next 100 have to be purchased at $120. It's really quite simple if you understand how the process works. The larger your inventory, the less frequent the price changes (but the higher your inventory carrying costs). The lesser your inventory, the more the pricing is going to be affected by swings in the exchange rate.

Wayne, thanks for the explanation. Since the original post yesterday, I had several misconceptions about the price increase. Your answer cleared those up!.

Update: I decided to suck up the price difference and buy from Pelican.

The product should be arriving today.
