67 912 2.0l flywheel removal

tried removing the gland nut from the flywheel using 1000# impact to no avail. Tried locking the flywheel and with 5 foot cheater on the 36 mm socket tried brute force, still no avail. Afraid to heat, please comment to Carpediem12520@aol.com.

Appreciate your assistance.

load the engine into your truck and haul it down to the local les schwab store. their 3/4" impacts will spin it off no problem. used to do that myself.

That one is a PITA!!! Especially on the ground since it takes less force to move the engine than to break the bolt free. Here is how I did it. Wedge flywheel in place with 4-5' bar attached to locking device. 4' cheater bar on 1/2 drive snap on breaker bar viola no more problem. My friend is very much into 356's and they have the same problem so if this is not clear enough I could get his 2 cents. In fact it was his home built wedge / cheater bar assembly that I borrowed to do mine.

Garage
I think Harry Pellow used to use a 6' or 8' breaker bar and his wife would hold the engine stand down.

One of the problems has been the socket slips off before we can apply enough torque

Friend of mine just went through this--just keep at it-although they did break a Craftsman extension in the process. Finally with breaker/cheater bar the nut was removed..

Obviously, these nuts should be replaced and not re-used..

Good luck-you'll get it eventually!

you have to create a special 356/912 gland nut socket by grinding it to a taper where it will fit all the way over the nut. they are too squared off in stock form and hit the flywheel before they cover the nut.

OK. This is off topic, but how did you get your 616 engine up to 2.0l? The only p/c I have ever seen take it up to only 1.8l

Friday and still no luck

We have loaded it in the truck and it is going to one of the bigger independent Porsche shops in Denver . They say they can get it off .

RIP Maestro, there will never be another like you (thanks be to G_d).

Quote:
.....Looks like we gotta pull the flywheel. So the Maestro went over to his tool kit and pulled out the 10 foot long, extendible 3/4" Breaker Bar, used to remove every flywheel nut so far, no matter who overtorqued it or by how much.

.....The Maestro played Archimedes and showed the Juggler where to stand on the Engine Stand, placed the 36mm socket on the flywheel nut and began to exert Torque. Before he exerted much more than a handful of foot pounds, the flywheel nut LOOSENED!

.....Oh, God, thought the Maestro- the previous Turkey FORGOT even to torque the Flywheel Nut!
