early cars and driving lights

My winter "to-do" list keeps growing. I just got a set of H-4's (lights only - I prefer to keep the sugar-scoop look) and now I'm thinking driving lights and fogs. I'd like to add amber lensed fogs under the bumper and clear lensed driving lights through the horn grilles. Now for the questions:

1) Does anyone know what hellas (or others) work well in either location besides the originals? (I don't have that kind of $$ )

2) Does anyone think this would be overkill?

3) I still have the original cover blanks under my bumper, and Ive noticed a lot of pics here where those are missing and empty. Am I stupid to remove these, and can they be easily put back?

I saw a pic on here somewhere of a car with this setup and really liked it - I'll post it here if I find it again.

Thanks

Not sure of the model number but the ones that bolt on through the horn grills are sure pricey. There are some available out there that are close but the price is still high.

If you do not get any replies, do a search on "backdate" and believe that you might find someone mentioning the fogs there.

the originals are hellas and the last time i priced em wee around 400 for oem from a guy on ebay 2 years ago.

i chose a set of carello's that are the same size and shape on ebay for 100 about 2 years ago. they are not original like the hellas, however they are period correct, they are the right size and shape, they are a great quality light, from a company that has been lighting motor sports for a long long time. they also come with covers to protect them, and they cost alot less.. i would love the hellas, but since im not a 100% originality afficianato, the carrellos were a no brainer for me.

sorry i dont have a better pic right now.

here is a clear set on ebay right now

The Cibie Tango 40 is nearly the same as the old Hella 118s. The will mount to the factory bracket and grill with ease our you can fabricate your own. The difference in lighting is tremendous.

Those driving lights are Hellas. Don't know the model number but they are a Mercedes use. Larger than the 118s that were the Porsche option. They use a H4 bulb. One good place to look is Samba. I've seen them around $125. There are all kinds of them there in fog and driving styles. I look for them and buy through Germany EBay. Even with the additional shipping cost you can find better deals if you are willing to take the chance.

I also have a couple of sets I'm working on. That is what I'm going to be installing. As an interesting note to some. I have seen factory press photos of the early 67S with these same lights installed definitly not the 118s. I think that they used them before they officially came out with the smaller 118.

I got a pic of the Tango40 from www.danielsternlighting.com
They are E-code and 55w, $92-96/ea. I couldn't find the lens dia.

The Oscar180 are also 55w & E-code @ $129/ea. Again no size.

Wow, thanks for all the great responses on the round lights!! I think the tangos may be what I need.

Now, about the rectangular fogs under the bumper, any ideas on what would work on my '72? I really need to know the dimensions of the originals so I can match the look as close as possible.

A pelicanhead just did the stock fogs into Cibie driving lights a few months ago. It was a good thread. It was not a perfect size and he had to make brackets. WTF, an extra 1/2" for oil cooler air.

Eyeball Stern's web sight then call him. he's a home run for photon operating tech. He has more ideas that what's on his sight.

I've seen those proper Hella fogs listed at Performance. Otherwise I have an original set laying around. You interested or maybe just dimensions? I also have some period Cibies in amber that fit well too.

Cheers,

On a related topic, has anyone modified their stock horn grills to be used with through the grill lights, or found original cut out grills? Any tips and/or experience on doing the mods? Did anyone make or use a template from an original grill?

While this topic is still in motion I'd like to ask a some what related question.

I have large Oscar Racing that I may have to mount on the hood. Does anyone know if there is a related bracket available as they will have to be aligned. I haven't attacked the install yet.

I have found light mount locks that spin on the shaft from under.

thx

I've got a set of originals if you need a template. Never done the mod myself but, don't think it's that difficult. Small metal saw and a dremel.

Thanks, Michael...if you could do a template, that would be great. I figured on the small saw & dremel, and then out for a re-chrome.

PM'd you with my e-mail
