I see they are E-code lights, are these what came stock on euro model 79' porsches??
Looks like the wiring harness was modded to me though....also the bottom light wasn't hooked up and I don't see any connections for it...

H2s and H4s are not stock in the US...Us cars used sealed beams.

mdurbahn 09-18-2007 08:34 PM

Is that stock for a euro car though?

Mike_Lettrich 09-19-2007 05:16 AM

Yes and no. Yes, they would have come on the car in Europe. No, they would not have been on the car when it was federalized for the U.S. because they are not DOT approved. The H4s would have been removed and standard U.S. style headlights would have been installed. Then at some time in the past, H4s were put back on.

Love the light green metallic, btw.

another question about lights:

The plastic area under my lights are a bit dirty looking. I've tried rubbing them clean using various products, however the plastic seems to be faded/sun damaged.

I was going to remove them and repaint. I was thinking of using a gray primer then a semi-gloss off white color.
Anyone have any alternative suggestions to getting them white again?

here is a photo of the area I am talking about: (this photo doesn't show the damage well, as it was cropped from a larger photo of my car).

Many would respectfully suggest you get some H4 lights such as these:

And so would I! :D

The H4 lights do look cool, yet my 930 is 100% original stock and I plan on keeping this one this way. I want it to remain true to the way it was designed.

I do plan on getting a second 930 at some point in the next several years which will be my 930 for all the fun mod's.

I bought new ones. It looks so much better than before.

"I want it to remain true to the way it was designed."
Not a bad plan at all! :)

Hey Scott, the new ones you bought ...did you paint them? From the PP's photo they look like they are primer gray? I thought about getting new ones originally but if they have to be painted then I mise well just paint the ones I have? -unless they are already the correct white-ish color?

(and I just placed an order to PP's a few days ago for a few other bits + pieces)!! :)

Let me know, i'll submit an order for new ones if they don't need to be painted,

Nesslar,
don't get me wrong I would love to replace many items on my 930 to give it an updated look, yet because it's so original I just can't bare to alter it (hence why I am going to convince the wife that we need a second 930, which I plan on tailoring to the way I'd like).

nesslar 09-19-2007 01:19 PM

:) I understand. It's a fine plan. How about more pics? SmileWavy

I don't have many photos of my car on my work computer, yet I'll add more photos to my profile when I get to my home machine!

Take the lights apart and clean the dirty area as best you can then wipe quickly with lacquer thinner. You'll see what I mean the moment you do it.

eR1c 09-19-2007 02:36 PM

lacquer thinner, -i'll try it out. (thanks for the tip).

I know what you mean. My old ones had some sort of paint peeling off. The new ones are grey plastic. I just left them as is (no paint or other finish).

Dang, that looks really nice. From the PP's photo I had the impression that the gray inserts were flat and primered. They look like they have a nice semi-gloss like the original inserts.

I am going to try the lacquer thinner technique and if no success I will purchase some inserts like yours.

nice color for your porsche!

eR1c 09-24-2007 10:43 AM

Thank you Milt for the advice on using lacquer thinner to clean the light rims. (check out the photos, -this process worked great)!

Also, because mine were so discolored it was difficult to determine their true color until I took them apart and was able to look at the area not exposed to the elements (sun, bug grime, etc). Their true color is a kind of white/gray color ...so new ones from PP's would work great as well and not need to be painted to remain true to the originals (thanks Scott for the post + pic).

Here is the before photo:
(Notice the yellowing in the plastic).
