Broken Heater Cable fix?

I have one broken heater cable on my 81. It looks like a pretty straight forward fix, has anyone done it? I have searched some and it looks like I can just replace the wire, not just the wire and casing. How much time should I budget? I’d appreciate any thoughts or feedback!

It is pretty easy if a little tedious. I can't remember but I think I might have disconnected or at least reaaaally loosened my e-brake cables to get better access to the handbrake cluster - but try without it first, you might have enough access. If you do have to re-adjust your e-brake cables, the procedure is documented in the Haynes manual and is straightforward.

Yes, the cable slides right out of the sheath - no need to replace that too.

Berryville, I'm originally from Front Royal, small world.
You just replace the cable. After removing the broken one, fish the new one in through the cabin. Not really possible to do it from the other end. Make sure you support the fitting where it attaches to the flapper box when you loosen it. If you bend the new cable sharply it will break. Takes about an hour, you have to jack up the back to get to where the cable attaches to the flapper box.

Good Luck,

Mac

Carter,

Just a hint on a low cost option for the cable. I bought a complete generic lawnmower throttle control cable set from local big box hardware store. Pulled the inner cable out of the guide and formed a loop that I connected to the heater control lever in the 911 and threaded the remainder through the steel guide in the center tunnel and on to the flex guides beneath the car. Pull the cable tight from the heater flapper box location and thread through the drilled bolt and nut in the flapper box and clamp tightly with the nut. I recall the complete kit was less than $10.

Good luck.

Mike

I had to replace the heater cables on my car when I added the center 3 speed heater console to my car. I do recall that it was a bit of a pain. Make life easy and remove the seat or seats. You need to unbolt the handbrake lever from the floor and try to wiggle it into a position that will allow you to get to the heater cables. Some are just looped thru the heater lever and will need to be unwrapped to remove. Later cars have a spring clip that holds the cable loop in place. My tale... about halfway down the page:
