Exclamation Quick repair - how much REALLY needs to come off?

The Bentley manual suggests disassembling half of the front bodywork to replace a front turn signal housing. Is this really required?

I have to get my car reinspected as they failed me for a faster flashing turn signal on one side. All the bulbs work, but I know one of the sockets is failing. I need to get this done as quickly as possible.

Any guidance would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks.

Chris

It may be corrosion on the bulbs. I had a similar problem on one of the rears. Cleaning up the bulbs and sockets got it working again.

It's easier than it appears to remove the indicator housing.

First, remove 2 of the screws attaching the bumper bellows on one side of the car. Then remove the screws holding in the rubber strip in the center of the bumper. You can then peel the strip back to reveal the bolts holding on the bumper. Remove those and you can swing the bumper off and you will have access to the turn signal housings on both sides.

I agree with Don - check the bulbs and sockets first.

AtomicDog,
I just had the exact same problem with my 85 911 left turn signal. Once you take off the lens cover Unscrew the Phillips holding the reflector to access behind the reflector. Check the spade connectors connecting to the bulb socket and the two connections at the back of the assembly. Mine had corrosion on the connectors. Once I cleaned them and reconnected things the problem was solved.

Good luck,
John

don911,

Replaced a burnt-out bulb just a little while back. Cleaned the contact points on the bottom of the socket. There seems to be a hang-up, as the socket would not spring back to hold the bulb in the bayonet mount.

rdrr,

That may be what I end up doing... I was hoping to avoid bumper removal entirely.

jrumiano,

This is good news. I had not torn far enough into the assembly to realize that there are more contact points behind the reflector. Hopefully, this will take care of the problem. If not, I have a good used assembly to go in following a bumper drop.

Thanks for your help, guys.

Chris
