Garage addition question

I'm taking my pathetic 20X22 2 car garage and enlarging it to a respectable 31X33 (property setback limits) and adding a third stall.

My question is should I have the cement contractor put a pit in the floor that I could pull the 911 over to work on it without having to jack it up? Has anyone ever done this or seen it done?

When it's not in use I figured I'd have some steel grating to put over the trench.

I thought I'd go about 3 or 4 feet wide by 5 or 6 feet long, maybe 2 or 3 feet deep. I'd pull the car over the trench and use a creeper to work on the car.

Thoughts?

I've worked in many "pits", which are illegal most places now, good places to collect poisonous/explosive gases. if you do it anyway, make it deep enough to stand up in, and then some. so the top of the pit is at the top of your head. easier to stand on a stool in the pit to reach up than hunker down. if you do the creeper depth it limits your reach too much. have you thought about a hoist, they're pretty cheap now and can help with the multiple car parking situation. what about getting a pair of rails made with ramps to drive the car up? then you can scoot around the whole floor on your creeper and when you're done, shove the rails against a wall.

I agree, far better to install some anchor bolts for a two-post lift than a pit that will require a deeper footing, fill up with water and oil and catch every dropped tool and unobtainable small flying part.
