Sportomatic Questions

I have a 69 911E Sporto that has been off the road since 1981. I have had it about a year and have cleaned up the fuel system and rebuilt the brakes completely. I took it for a drive up and down my 50 driveway to evaluate the Sportomatic before venturing further.

It seems slow to engage the clutch. I sometimes need to rev the engine to get it to engage and then it jumps into gear. Once engaged it seems to hold fine. But then its only a 50 foot test so far. Even hit second gear once!

Ive been reading up here..thanks to all for the posted info. Very informative.
My plan is as follows, please advise.

1) Please see my photo of the shifter switch. Does this look correct. Seems odd to me. Is there a schematic for this circuit available?

2) Vacuum lines look a bit old and crusty. They also have wire circlips holding them onto the connections which don't seem to hold well. Is there a source for new vacuum lines? Any specific hose that should be used? I will likely switch to hose clamps.

3) Test Servo. I will use Fishcops suck test to confirm the servo. However I read that there should be a horn sound at start up related to the servo. There is a horn sound that is constant when the ignition is on and the motor is not running. Is this related to the servo?

4) Test solenoid. Will listen for Click when shifter moved. Will readjust per Hanes manual. Is there a suck test for this one also?

Anything else to check??

The man I bought this from was not a Porsche person and there is about 3 quarts of extra oil in the car...need to drain that soon as its stinking up the neighborhood....

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Maze,
For the schematics of the Sporto, you should get a Sporto Annex to the Drivers Manual. It has eleven pages of schematics.
I got one from Autolit(Walter Miller) several months ago to widen my education on these trans.
It was about US$25 and was a NOS item. From memory they had about 10/15 left.Check it out !
Can't help with the tech side of this trans but keep going - these things are a dying breed !

Cheers,
Dennis.

Thanks for the replies.

Just couldnt figure out how to get my head down into the engine compartment. So I went to the local auto parts store and borrowed a vacuum tester to do Fishcop's suction test.

Lucky me, it holds vacuum tight.

So, onto next step...replacing vacuum lines and clamps. Picked up some 1/2" heater hose. Not sure if this will hold up long term as it has no fabric cover, but should get me going again and confirm the function.

Will install in a few days and adjust the solenoid.

Stay tuned.

Update

Installed the vacuum lines and it was still slow to engage.

Started to worry, but then adjusted the vacuum solenoid screw faceing the back of the car and the car literally jumped into gear when shifted. I adjusted back a bit until it in now smooth as silk

Took the car for a nice drive around the neighborhood....what a fun car to drive! I really like this sportomatic. Im not much into pedal to the metal driving just love well engineered products and this is pretty cool.

Thanks for all the advice!

Years ago my dad had the vacuum canister in his sporto rebuilt by a place that works on air brakes.
