Bruned cap and rotor?

I was having some severe surging and hesitation issues since my rebuild, then it got worse. The search feature led me to a few dozen things, two items being the cap and rotor. I removed these last night and the inside was completely carbon tracked, and the points on the cap are burned and black, and the rotor tip is worn down to the plastic.

These parts aren't that old, probably a few months post rebuild and this has me worried. I did replace the cap and rotor with my spare and problems are solved. But what would cause this in such a short time? What else do I need to replace?

Are you by any chance running an MSD box and extra-wide spark plug gaps???

MSD with the standard gap, any issues there?

Well, looks like your MSD found the weakest points in your ignition system, and went on 'full obliterate mode' attack! Wider gaps make it happen faster, still!

Now, just what was supposed to be the justification for installing an MSD box rather than just a coil switched by the MS?

Two reasons, and thanks for the answer, makes sense to me. First, I had the MSD 6 box on the shelf, and second my MS does not have the ignition tables in it, that's default for the kit. I could add them, however complexity goes up.
