Track Pads AT CMP
First let me say that I have done numerous searches and have read the many opinions. Now I really want someone's opinion on my conclusion. My car is a '79 SC as noted below. Suspension is completely stock as well as the brakes. Brakes and calipers were rebuilt in the spring with stock pads.
I am still a beginner at the track having just finished my 3rd DE. I am going next weekend to Carolina Motor Park and have been warned about brake use and abuse. From reading the many posts I have learned tons including the fact that stock SC rotors with race pads may actually be the wrong way to go due to heat dissipation problems. I actually think my car and brakes are still ahead of my learning curve and won't be an issue. Opinions please... |
Porsche brakes are 'what I do' (www.Rennstore.com), so here is my advice for a beginner:
Cooling. Make sure the backing splash guards are off for dry track days. AJ-USA cool kit is also a very good idea Fresh, GOOD fluid. Motul 600. It has got to be fresh. Track pads: Highly recommend Pagid RS19 Yellows |
Lets see... Three DEs under the belt. One stock '79 911 on street tire(?) Recent brake refresh. Never run CMP before.
Fear not, you'll be fine. Provided you adhere to two caveats:
Sure, ducting and race pads would be nice. But I don't think you'll be able to wring out CMP that hard (okay, maybe if I'm your instructor. ;)) Plus, by the end of the weekend you'll probably need new pads anyway. Look at it as a nice opportunity to run better pads come Monday. And just think. We haven't even started talking about the opportunity for new tires yet. I hope to see you next weekend. Look for a red '88 sporting the number 11. I'm usually near pit-out. And have you looked into doing the Turn1 event the Friday before? Nice club. Lots, and lots of seat time on Friday. At least as much as you'll get Saturday and Sunday combined. Follow the link in my signature and give them a call. They still have some openings. |
Sent you a PM Captain...

At your level, and for the first time at CMP, you'll be fine if you follow Rob's advice for fresh high performance fluid and plenty of pad. Rob's a veteran there, knows the place well, and is even a pretty nice guy. (most of the time).
I've never thought CMP is as hard on brakes as some say, and I've turned many laps there in a moderately quick car. John |
