Hello,
Been searching threads on the topic above and couldn't find the right answer. Hopefully someone can chime in. I'm thinking of upgrading my 3.2 Euro with 964 cams. Can someone tell me how extensive the job is in doing this project? Do they bring the motor down and open it up? How long will it usually take to do this? ![]() And what kind of cost can i expect on this? thanks onsse

I suppose someone might try to do this without removing the engine, but I would remove it. Perhaps a professional Porsche mechanic could do this without removing the engine. That would save you money, but the job would still take a few hours, I would think. The rockers all would need to be removed. And the sprockets and chains and.......
It's a Saturday job for a backyard gearhead. Plus the cost of the cams. It is a nice upgrade, though. I've got 20/21 cams. I think they are sometimes called 964+ cams. They make a big difference. The car is much easier to drive, with a wider power band. Much more low end. At least, on my late-model SC.

No way would I attempt to do that with the motor in the car. Maybe with a partial drop on a lift, but, man, there are lots of things to have to reach and unbolt, then rebolt. Take it out. You don't even have to separate the trans if you don't want to.
One day? Yeah, if everything goes as planned and you're a pretty good wrench. Remember to change the rockers to refurbished ones for break in. |

You should budget 300$ - 400$ for the cams. Either a regrind of your existing cams or find some good used 964 cams with no PS-drive. And have the rockers repolished. This is maybe 100$ at a machine shop.
If I were you, I would also replace the seals for the cam tower to chain boxes and the chain housing to engine case seals. The O-ring between the cam tower and the chain housings gets hard with time. These run maybe an additional 50$. So all in all it is a long weekend job and the total budget is around $500 plus beer money and pizza money for helpers..... In-re-reading your initial post it seems you are looking for someone to do this for you. If "they" refers to a shop I would assume a $800 tap for the work mentioned. Cheers, Ingo

Most likely, this will take a couple of days since it will be scheduled in with other work. I would guess you drop off the car on Monday and get it back on Thursday...
Alternatively, you might want to check into some "mobile mechanics" that come to your place and do it in your drive-way or garage.
