Carbon Fibre Targa Hard Top
Some of you may remember when I developed and produced the fiberglass Targa hard top. Well, I sold the rights and tooling to a fiberglass manufactur who has been making the parts for the various distributurs. Now I have been informed that he has custom made a carbon fiber top for a customer. This is something I had planed down the road but sold the rights before I ever got to it. It is a special order only and i suppose at a big premium but if you are interested check with pelican to find out. I have'nt seen the final part yet, still waiting for the final install and pics but I bet its a good looking top. I will try to post the pics as soon as i get them.

That does sound cool! I plan to make a carbon fiber cab hardtop for my car once I have the mold perfected.

When i talked to the production people at the fabricators about this they said about 10% of the parts they produce in c/f for cosmetic purposes are rejected because the c/f is hard to lay up and keep all the weave going in the right direction so it doesn't look all warped so this impacts on the price of the part. He makes a lot of c/f parts for cosmetic purposes and has some very skilled people that do the layup and still have rejects.. One thing they do tape off about an inch from the edges and spray in black gel coat. This covers the edges of the c/f to hide any imperfections.
Widebody The back of the top where you have some compound curves is where you will have the biggest trouble trying to keep the weave from getting crooked. Jerry |

Sounds cool. If the manufacturer wants to get rid of cosmetic seconds I would take one to paint it. I don't care about the weave direction.

kach22i: I loved the velvet storage bag idea and am having one made.
JonT: Installation & fitment was easier and better than I had anticipated. It's best to buy a donor top for under $100. if you can find one. Then use the frame for your new top. zefsuper911: The price wasn't bad(IMO) since I was looking for a Saratoga top but a perfect one was real expensive and real hard to find and failure down the road was almost a certainty even for one in good shape.$700 + shipping. You can put a special order in w/Pelican and they can get it done for you! Hope this helps! Nikita

Nikita,
Where did you get the top? Looks nice and like Jamie could care less about the weave as I would paint mine. JoeA

JoeA, I went to the Kaminari web site(they bought the rights from Jmpro) and saw that they made alot of products in carbon fiber. Since they obviously had the mold for the top I asked if they made it carbon he first said no then asked me to hold on. He came back on the phone and said he would make me one and it would be done in 9 days. I asked how much, he said $700 + shipping, I said great...I'll take it! Now this is an orderable item through Pelican! If you are going to paint it I would just get the f/g model. I'm not sure how much weight you will actually save.
Nikita

How much does the CF top weigh? I have a spare factory FG top and it is much heavier than the vinyl top, and therefore I don't use it very often. However, it is quieter when installed.
