Help! I need an Intervention
I've been thinking of selling my '84 Carrera and getting a low mileage concourse condition 928. I know many of the stories but tell me why this would be a real bad idea. I'd still keep the '73 and the '96. Keep in mind that it would be a garage queen and I live in Florida with long straight interstates......

Why not? You've had and still have plenty of 911's. A 928, with all the electrics working, would be a nice cruiser.

Sell the 96, keep the 84 and 73.
Then buy the 928. The 928 (with no electrical gremlins) is truly a gentleman's high speed touring car. I quite like driving them. Just my 2 centavos. angela |
I've looked at 928s extensively in the last 2 months. I have two recommendations: get a euro car or get an S4.
The vault-like nature is wonderful, but the early U.S. cars feel like driving an actual bank vault with a '63 VW truck motor attached. Ponderous! BTW, if you are OK with the early US cars, there are some great deals out there. I looked at an 83 auto. Body 10, Drivetrain 10, Suspension 7, interior 3. Electrical: everything worked (but I don't think you can give it a grade...next day everything could stop working for no reason at all). Price: $3000 So if you are handy with some overthecounter ultrasuede and 3M spraytack, you'd have a beautiful car. |
No intervention from me neither. With that fantastic stable left I would think a good 928 is perfect. I agree with Shaun, the later models have a lot going for them.

Why not? If you change your mind, it's not like there's a shortage of nice Carreras. True, it's nice to have a representative of 'those years' of 911, but whatever.
Get an S4 that's nice but not so nice you're afraid to drive it. |

Just make sure you get the best one you can find; condition, records, etc. A 928 in near perfect shape is an extremely enjoyable car to own. As long as you still have a 911, your golden.

I certainly don't see anything wrong with a 928, but you have a very nice Carrera. I personally think you'll regret selling it someday (don't we all have at least one car we regret selling?)
Good luck either way, and let us know what you decide! That said, I certainly hope the A/C in the sharks are better than the systems in our cars! (not that I am needing it now that the temps have dropped into the 60s and 70s). Later, Mike |
I loved the S4 that I used to own. If it was a 5 speed it would still be in my garage, next to me 911....

They are very different cars. Both excellent in different ways. It has been said, more than once, that you can get into a 928 and drive for 8 hours, get out, turn around and get back in and drive for another 8 hours. I just sold my 85 928S (automatic) because I am not traveling anymore and fell into a third 911. Just too many cars and time to specialize. I found it more reliable than the 911, easier to drive, surprisingly light on its feet, tends not to swap ends, got 20mpg on the road...... The 928 turns more heads than the 911, in my opinion and experience and almost every 911 driver will say, "I have always dreamed of owning one of those," There are a few manageable maintenance items with the later 928s that require attention. Remember too, when a 911 was $24K car the 928 was a $48K car and parts are priced accordingly. Lots of support available and some very good vendors. Do it 2 it! DON'T FORGET TO GET A PPI FROM A 928 SPECIALIST.
