Resistor Function
 

Checking the lights on my 1982/911SC I found a RESISTOR linked betwen the HAZARD FLASHER terminal 58 and teminal 58a at the LIGHT SWITCH.
part # OEM 91161224900
Now...What is the function of this resistor? and if defective .. What kind of simtoms. What will not work?

That resistor is in series with the light in the flasher switch that glows when the lights are on, so you can find the switch easily. I'll bet that resistor is to perform the dimming, down from what might be a full bright light. Note that when the lights are on, if the flasher switch is ON, the circuit thru the resistor is opened and the switch applies full voltage to the light -- and it flashes BRIGHT with the flashers on the corners.

If it were defective ... If it becomes an open circuit (or is disconnected), the light in the switch will not burn when the lights are on. If it becomes a short circuit, the light will be steady bright when the lights are on.

The resistor is to drop voltage to the lamp that illuminates the switch so as to not be distracting at night. When the hazard switch is off, the current to illuminate the lamp must pass through the resistor allowing it to illuminate but dimly. When the switch is on, current flow to the lamp is fed from a different source that provides full voltage to the lamp in sync with the flashing signals on the car.

Thank's for the reply.
Value info. for the lights inspection. I notice that the cables conecctions at various places are kind of dyrty and corroded.. In some instances I have to cut a piace of cable to find fresh copper (for exaple, the fuse block cables) and reconnect .
Is there another aproach to this situation? A clening solution for example( Tarnix) ?Something I can use to clean the tip of the cables and reconnect?
