Thumbs up Fresh Gear Oil-Nice G50 again!

My G50 was feeling not itself lately; I was wondering if my Tranny was going to need some work

I last changed the gear oil in Feb '05 and have only put on 20K Km since, but the shifting from 1-2-3 was getting bad. I've been running Redline 75W90NS. When I changed it my first time back in '05, about a year and 10K Km after buying it, the shiffting really improved "like butta" as someone once said.

Lately, I really had to take my time otherwise I would run into the synchros moving across my shifter. I didn't think the oil had broken down over time and so few miles. Nonetheless I changed it out again tonight with the same, Redline 75W90NS, and took it out in the dark, in the pouring rain and incidentallly got stopped by a cop (she thought I was driving a little crazy; they just have to stop someone who drives confidently!!). But i digress; the new/fresh gear oil gave me back my G50 I knew!! It shifts effortlessly again. I'm happy it was only a $35 fix. But I'm also surprised that the oil didn't last longer. Now I know.

I ran Redline in my G50 for a while, I have to say, I didn't much like the feel.

What are you running now in your gear box?

You know, I tried a few different ones until I found the one that I thought felt best - but it's been a couple of years now and I'm not 100% sure what it was. I can check my records on Monday, but I'm pretty sure it was Mobil 1 gearbox oil.

I run Redline in my BMW manual trans, and it's been great. But made my G50 not shift as well.

The Redline works well, although I've never tried Mobil 1 so I can't say objectively. Maybe in another couple years I'll give it a go. As for life expenctancy, do you find that 2years is what you get out of Mobil 1? (I know it is recommeded to change every two years).

I noticed the same improvement in my G50 with Mobil 1 75W90. But then again, that was before I was a Pelican member and I was using Swepco...

I would have run Swepco as well before Pelican. My wrench at the time, while I was new to the 911, suggested new Swepco gear oil. He knows his 911SC's very well, but the G50 doesn't do well with Swepco, so I've learned on this board.
