964 pop up spoiler on SC?
Hmmm.....just learned from Randy Webb in another recent newbie post that this is a possible way to loose my tea tray w/o sacrificing 80 mph-plus stability.
Comments/pics from anyone having done this to their pre-964 car? How much might it cost to have this done (by a mech./body shop)? What could I expect to get for my tea tray (no rubber or other defects)? |

yes, Jack did it & there is a thread on it somewhere...
|
Please do post the thread here when you find it. Or if no thread please post what you find. I am very interested i doing this as well. I love a tail that retains factory look until you need it!!!
|
The 964 tail is not likely going to help your SC as much as the tea-tray type. THe 964 has aero aids beyond the spoiler, and can get similar results (lift-kill) with less tail.
. ..but is still better than no tail. |
|
I have the 964 tail/decklid and my stock carrera whale tail. I can tell you that the 964 wing is not as good for aero up around 100mph or above. It also causes my engine to run about 10 deg. warmer.
This is my experience using it on the track. YMMV |

i bought mine from Josh Smith, who had the hinges reworked (search) to fit the SC.It runs much cooler. Never runs above the 9 o clock position,so cooling is a definite benny, regarding the areo effect, mine is a street car,so ask jack or josh, they both shed theirs in favor of the duc tail.
Astetchically, i like the little bastard on the back of the SC |
you will have to delete the a/c condenser as the underhood parts of the spoiler interferes with it. You may also have to grind a little off the edge of the alternator fan ring- if will rub on some cars causing an annoying noise
|
I didn't have to grind my fan ring, but my A/C condensor is on the shelf. I plan on using a wheel well unit as a substitute. And, I plan on designing and making a small duck tail like extension for the C2 lid. Maybe that will make it work a bit better.
I'd keep your Carrera tea tray in storage for when you might change your mind. Cost? Plan on at least 500 for the lid, 200 for painting if it's not the right color and an hour's labor to install on provided, modified hinges. Someone here makes those hinges and sells them on an exchange or out right basis. I think exchange is 125. (you might want to keep your stock hinges, too.) Then, there's the wiring which I have not done yet. I have the stuff and that's 50 bucks or so right there. If I hired someone to do the wiring, I'd expect a half day in labor if they knew what to do right off. |
do a search for member "mattman" here or the classified section. he did hinges different that thom's 964 modified units by redoing the older style hinges. they are the berries. i had both type of hinges and his are better than the modded 964 units.
when you find mattman's posts there are threads linked that are a bit newer than thom's linked page above that get more into the install. ive watched for a while and prices are all over on those things. when i was looking the were expensive, like 400 expensive. i have seen them for cheaper and for what i paid. i found a second one in factory color match my car and sold the my originally purchased one in a primed condition. milt, if i could wire one i am pretty sure you could. the schmatic here by tyson did not work for me, i talked to the autolock (the device you need to operate the wing with a porsche window switch) tech line, faxed them tyson's work and they suggested i try it another way and it worked. the tech guy did like tyson's idea & engineering in working their product in.. Thanking you in advance. |
Sc
I carried out this mod,
although the hinges off the 964 are much beefier' than the SC options I think you need to re drill a couple of holes to resite the hood correctly, looks great, and needs a spare window up/down rocker switch and fuse the engine bay gets very hot sometimes, and my wires melted after being installed un shielded, where they pass from cover to below rear window area so be aware. Physically it fits just about although I recall moving the coil ever so slighly sideways and it does foul the fan cowling slightly TBH though the amount of stability it offers is nothing like the tea tray and you notice this straight away:eek: so again just be ready for that as further still it needs manually switching up and down, and you do forget from time to time |
