A/C compressor working?
 

How do I check if the A/C compressor is working properly?

Does any one have pics on what to do?

I searching threads, I do notice a line of oil/grease on the inside of my rear deck lid above the compressor pulleys.

My system is out of R12 so I don't want to get it charged yet. I am considering the Rennaire system.

Based upon your description, I am guessing the shaft seal on your compressor has failed, letting first the refrigerant and then a quantity of compressor lube escape.

Normally, with a functioning system, you can do a rudimentary check by listening for compressor engagement when the A/C switch is activated. Some systems, however, (and I do not know if yours is set up this way) will not engage the compressor clutch if the refrigerant level is too low. This is to prevent the lube from being pumped out of the compressor.

Hope someone with more knowledge of your system chimes in.

To make sure my Compressor was operational, I Hotwired the snowflake control. You will have to pull apart the Center Console & get to the back of the controls, careful back there, you do not want to break the tube that feeds to your Evaporator. Anyway there is a plug you can put a wire across, turn on the air, car running of course, & your Compressor clutch should be turning. Dont know if that is the correct way, but that's how I checked. Found my converted R134 was low. Blows cool but not cold now. I will probably upgrade before it gets Hot again.

Don't need to do all that, just contact short the compressor wires, see if the clutch operates.

In which case, take it to a good A/C shop. One that just does A/C is best in my opinion.
