Caliper compatibility - is this swap a good idea?
 

Will these 964/993 items really just bolt straight on to an '82 3.0 SC?

The mounting holes have been enlarged by 3mm, and they come with extended brake lines. I'm being told that the original SC caliper bolts will work.

Surely it would be advisable to fit the matching brake discs?

I don't trust the bloke who's selling them to be honest, neither am I knowledgable enough to know if the detail is correct so over to you Pelicans...

The front ones will but the rears need some work, but as you guessed it's not something that you should do.

That is why you shouldn't just bolt them on to you car.

May I ask you another please - do the appropriate replacement discs to match these calipers fit the SC without problems?

On the face of things, it appears as though the reward may be worth the effort given the differences. An earlier search appeared to suggest an increase of 4mm in disc thickness.

As a relative newcomer to Porsche I should reiterate that I'm not knowledgeable about this, but I'm interested to learn about it and would be happy to go ahead with it if the considered opinion is that it is indeed a worthwhile upgrade.

The correct rotors for 964 calipers are 964 roters. However they do not fit because of o/s issues.

VCI does adapt 944t rotors front and either MY84-89 Carrera or 914 rotors for the back. These rotors are all the correct size for your calipers.

Unfortunately it's still not a bolt on as extensive machining is needed on all of the calipers.

I see, so the matching discs won't work, and ones that will would require some machining of the calipers.

I'm glad I asked now, rather than taking the seller at his word.

The VCI kit to which Bill refers uses a 28mm wide disc from a a986 944 Turbo. It costs about $500 to modify the front calipers and you will need to also have them machine a set of rear calipers too, or simply use stock carrera rear calipers with the stock 24mm rear carrera rotor. I have a set of 964 front and Carrera rear calipers sitting on a shelf in my garage and I'm trying to decide if I want to do this or not.

Do a search under 964 brakes and a few threads will pop us with all of the details.

If you do decide to do it, let me know and I could probably cut you a deal on the calipers I have.

I get the feeling that I could be at the edge of a very slippery slope here, one which bigger brakes won't stop me from falling down!

Besides, stock SC brakes will work just fine with stock SC engines in racing applications with some attention to air ducting, pad type, and high temp brake fluid. Unless you make a very significant increase in engine power (usually by increasing displacement), you don't need, and will derive no performance benefit from, bigger brakes.
