Starting Problem

Hello Everyone.
Got me a '84 Carrera. The other day the starter began acting up. It started with just a click when I turned the key and then sometimes I could hear the starter gear spinning but it was not engaging the fly wheel. I removed the starter, took it to my local starter/alternater guy. He said the motor looked good so he replaced the solenoid. Got home, installed it and it worked perfectly. The next day it started doing the same thing again. Any ideas??
The battery is good - 12.9 volts.
Less than a year old ign switch.
Thanks for any ideas.
Larry

Larry,

Can you check the battery voltage while you are cranking the starter?
I had this exact problem with an MG. The battery was about 12.4 volts at rest,
but when I checked it while cranking, it dropped to 3.4 volts
Replaced the battery and no problems since.

HTH,
Craig

starter ring on the fly wheel.
drop engine replacement, it is missing a few teeth. The ring is not expensive but it a whole lot of work to replace. Might as well start a list of the seals, clutch and stuff that you need to do with engine out. I had the same thing happen to me a couple years ago.
