opinions on 964 twin plug motors

I'm looking at an original owner, 22000 mile 93 RS America tomorrow. Can anybody comment on any specific trouble spots to notice on these cars? It did sit in storage for 3 years prior to being taken out this spring. They flushed the fluids, spun the motor by hand, cleaned the tank and added fresh fluids.

I've heard from jaded early car specialists that the later (post 3.2) motors had "issues". Anything else?

Thanks
Matt

yep - but only up to mid-92 from what I remember. That's when the head to cylinder sealing was re-designed. The head to cylinder leak was an issue on some early 964 engines. Oil leaks from the breather hose that gummed up the cooling fins of the cylinders only made the issue worse: local overheating caused the heads to warp and resulted in blow-by.

Among other issues I would check for exessive oil leaks (also hidden past events below the top shroud), dual dizzy working, having the vent kit as well as all the usual things on the 911. Bottom line: One word: PPI. Get a Prepurchase inspection. It might turn out to be the best money ever spent when buying a used 911.

Good luck,
Ingo

All the 3.6 engines have valve guide wear issues. Jerry Woods once told me that he's never seen a 3.6 opened up that didn't have worn guides. Worn guides are the reason that aux air valve clogs all the time in the 993s.
