Rebuild or replace CV joints and axles?
I am thinking of putting new halfshafts on my SC race car. I rebuilt them four years ago and at that time flipped the CV joints to get a little more life out of them. They have 125k miles on them. 10k of which is on-track.
1) When you buy complete axles are they pre-greased? If so, is this enough grease or do you recommend stripping them and repacking? 2) Do axles break from age requiring them to be replaced or should I just get new CV's and boots ($100 savings per side) and keep the axles? I'm assuming these come dry and I'll need to do that nasty greasing job again. (don't forget, it's a relatively low hp car) |
Depends if you're in a hurry or like messing with grease. It was big mess and hassle to install the 4 ends when I did it couple years ago. Don't forget there is a core exchange. The "new" axle you get might not be of same quality; they might have been subjected to high stress previously.
I had my axles and CV cryo treated prior to installation. |
thanks for the heads up.
