Factory Coil Output

Does anybody have any specifications on the factory coil output? For a 85-89 Carrera, Like in...............

Primary Resistance

Secondary Resistance

Maximum Voltage

Inductance

Turns Ratio

Peak Currant

Spark Duration

No, but I can tell you that the factory 3.2 DME coil has enough oomph to fire my plugs gapped at 0.060". My guess is 35-40 KV needed to jump that gap.

What kind of benefit did you get with .060"? better throttle response, more power, better fuel consumtion, one or all of these? Do you still run them gapped at .060"? or did you play with gap for best performance?

Thanks

As to Bentley data for coil resistance specs for primary and secondary windings:

Primary (terminals 1, 15): 0.4 - 0.7 ohms
Secondary (terminals 4, 15): 5.0 - 8.7 Kohms

(Bentley 280-9)

Will have to research the other items...

Best,

I wouldn't push any significant increase in the plug gap because you will put more stress on the other ignition componets risking failure somewere along the line. Maybe your coil can handle it but your rotor, cap, or wires (including resistors) may not.

Thanks dshepp806, I didn't even think to look in my Bentley manual for at least some of the information, when I find out the rest I'll post the info if anybodys interested.

I gap all my cars at 0.060" for all the above benefits but I also had to upgrade my ignition components to HEI which came standard on my Grand Caravan, Chrysler Concorde and '86 Olds 98.

I also tried a gap of 0.080" but had problems missing above 5k.

Cheers,

Joe
