my first 911

Hi All,

I just bought my first 911, a 1985 Carrera. What is absolutely the best motor oil to use?

Thanks a lot!

Tony

you just picked a hellofa topic to start, it has been covered here many times, suggest you do a search. Oil is a very personal decision, but you can't go wrong with Mobile 1 products.

Hoo boy...here we go...again.

I use Royal Purple Max Cycle synthetic (motorcycle oil). Has higher percentages of the "good stuff" that regular (automobile) motor oil does not. Mobil1 is good for modern engines, but I would not use it in an older motor.

Hours of good reading over here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

read thru this:
http://66.236.61.177/showthread.php?t=367300

the gist is that you need a certain level of Zn and Phosporus - not all Mobil One oils have an adequate amount, but some do.

also review this entire thread - your car is not real old but some things will need to be done, and done regardless of mileage.

Best wishes with the new car.

Welcome Tony!

Where are you located?

Where are the pics of your car?

Oil, oil, oil. It is like asking what color one like (almost). There are a lot of people claiming synthetic is bad for an old air cooled engine. There are a lot people saying nothing less than xw50. Then there are people like me who fill my 85 up with Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0w40 every year without any leaks or smoking and pulling like a train. Aiming to protect the engine as far as possible from the dreaded cold start wear.

As long as one uses a quality oil and changes it within reasonable intervals I will stick my neck out and speculate that there are no indisputable evidence that it will make any significant difference.

You are now entering the dark side of vintage Porsche passion ownership. There is no substitute and no escape. Welcome aboard!

thanks everyone. i love her! i can't wait until i learn how to drive her! that clutch is like a 300 pound hammer.

the previous owner rebuilt her - all original - and in removing the after market security system, disabled the central locks. so, as much as i'm raring to go, i'm tending to this stuff first. anyone ever had that problem?

also, what security systems do you guys use?

The whale tale adds about 25 HP for looks alone, IMHO.
Probably nothing else though.

My Targa was converted to cab with tail, fyi.

Nice Ride though, you'll enjoy that baby!

Cool car!! Welcome aboard! As previously mentioned, oil is a personal decision. Sounds funny but the more you read here the more you will see.

I have a stock 89 3.2 in my rig and I use Castrol 20-fitty. Old school dino product. If you want to go longer periods between changes, use synthetic.

There, that should get the juices of the masses flowing. ducking for cover
