custom plates on a 911 - dumb or fun?

I put a vanity plate on my last 911....got mixed reviews.

Thinking about doing it again

pls vote on my survey

DSPTurtle 10-14-2007 09:55 AM

I did one on mine. Haven't put the frame on yet but gotta have a plate or else the fuzz gets annoyed. I used the name of my company "BreitIdeas Business Management Consulting" because one of the major reasons I started the company was so I could eventually get myself a 911 turbo. Who knew it woudl be a slope nose to boot!!!
Here's a pic... I have gotten mixed reviews from people but that mostly falls in the "don't care" category. :D

twobone 10-14-2007 10:17 AM

I agree - the mixed revies don't bug me, its explaining to people what the plate means that gets to me.

My current plate is BAHNBRNR

As in barn burner with a german twist....only 2 people have given positive remarks...most others just make me explain it...and that is annoying...maybe my choice was just DUMB

jester911 10-14-2007 10:19 AM

It is your car so put on it what you like. I don't see any choices in the poll I would pick so I didn't vote. I went boring and just used my initials.

Oh Haha 10-14-2007 10:22 AM

I went with this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192386085.jpg

Not too many people wonder what it says but I do have a lot of PCA folks that want it when I'm done, if ever.

bmgmd 10-14-2007 02:41 PM

Mine's more esoteric; a number of Porschephiles had to ask what it meant (240 Silver Coupes for U.S.):

widgeon13 10-14-2007 04:01 PM

When people ask what it means I tell them it's sort of like Rubic's cube, you have to figure it out yourself. Most drop the subject at that point. I never had a vanity plate before this one.

DSPTurtle 10-14-2007 04:11 PM

So what does it mean?

Formerly Steve Wilkinson 10-14-2007 04:11 PM

Who among us puts a "kick me" sign on our keister? That's what a vanity plate on a Porsche is. You own the car, you can afford it, you appreciate it, beyond that leave it alone. There are a lot of people out there working two or even three jobs, driving used Corollas and volunteering for their community (I'm an EMS volunteer in our local ambulance corps) who don't need to be reminded how fortunate you and I are.

masraum 10-14-2007 04:13 PM

Vanity plates can be dorky, but most of the time they are ok or fun.

When I lived in NoVA, I used to see a car running around that had the plates I952FL. I suspect most folks didn't get it. I've seen L8APEX and that sort of thing, and that's cool too.

It's when I see "2FAST4U" and that sort of thing that I think... wanker.

Jeez, take all the fun out of it. I don't know where your van plate money goes, but some of ours is used wisely. I agree with the it's-your-car idea. We have 3 van plates out of 5 cars. Ad none of them are something obscure. You can readily see what they say/mean.

We've had a lot. Once we had LVPCJOY on a bug. What's not to love? Of course I once had ZEKE, but I let it go.... :(

I disagree. I drive an 84 Carrera, I could drive something faster and more expensive if I wanted but I choose to drive a 23 year old car and put up with the issues associated with a car that has 127,000 miles. It just looks different from other cars but most likely cost less than most Corollas. Oh, and I do my share of volunteering.

:rolleyes:Get over yourself Steve.....I have worked in the Emergency Services and volunteer associations for more than 30 years too, and I believe I have earned the right to live where I live, own what I own and drive what I drive. If I decide to purchase a flat sceen TV for my bedroom or put a vanity plate on one of my cars that's exactly what I will do without remorce for the people that can't afford to. If you feel that strongly about why don't you sell your Porche and buy a corolla and donate the rest to charity!
A vanity plate is a personal chioce and if you get the right one ca be a very lucrative investment.

I think it depends on what it's trying to say. If it's in your face I'm better than you, then it warns the rest of us that the owner is a wanker,so keep away.

I don't think that mine is to show-off-look-at-me. However, I could be wrong.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192412201.jpg

Interestingly. I originally asked if "1977" was available, the computer said yes. But when they went to order it, all "years" are reserved by the Federal Gov.......

Not bad for a 7 letter condensed version of Auf Wiedersehen (properly pronounced: "owf-VEEder-zane")

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192413976.jpg

Probably could have used a "d" instead of the 2. The the 2 sound more like the US mispronunciation so I went with it.

Komenda Fan 10-14-2007 06:43 PM

Well, I never did it for this reason... (a short story)

My buddy was driving home very late at night. Stops at a stop sign, nothing around, pulls out to turn right as a teenager dressed in black on a bicycle comes flying out of the park adjacent...BUMP. My buddy gets out..."kid, are you ok?" Kid jumps on his bike, and calls out he's fine and rides off before my buddy can say anything else.

A few hours later, the cops call my buddy, ask him if he owns a white Chev with licence plate MACH2. Yep. The kid called the cops, and my buddy was charged with hit and run, despite the fact that he didn't. Anyway, he had that hanging over his head for 18 months before it went to trial and he was acquitted.

Do you think the kid would have remembered the plate if it looked like everyone else's?

dipso 10-14-2007 06:56 PM

A personalized plate is mandatory for a finished Porsche. It is almost like , I can afford the fuchs but not the caps. Also it is good for showing the fags in the jacked up trucks, with the plates that say (small penis),back the **** off me.

Hugh R 10-14-2007 07:00 PM

Never could see paying extra every year for a vanity tag, especially since its a gubmit requirement to have a tag at all. If it was a one time thing, maybe. But here in Cali, they charge you extra each year for the priviledge.

the list of on going beneficiarys is too long to list, but include college grants, firefighter funds, coastal preservation and a lot more. I did say that maybe all the money wasn't spent perfectly, but some of it must be doing some good.

LOL ...that is about right. Though, for most states, the "plate" is just a big bumper-sticker for that state. Further, it's seems that we are all wearing a state issued " kick my state-pwnd-ass" sign on our keisters. So. I do think that there is something to having a degree of control over what that "kick me" sticker says.:)

note: I have the standard, state issued "kick me" sign on the keister.

ljowdy 10-15-2007 09:06 AM

Here in California, land of fruits and nuts, a portion of the personalized plate fund goes to environmental groups such as the radical organization called Sierra Club.

As an avid off roader, I opposed radical groups such as the Sierra Club because they want every off road area closed and when they are successful, no new area's open to ease the over crowding of the other area's that are open. They along with such groups as PEER and CBD ban together, pool their funding and have been successful in closing much of California's off road riding area's. They NEVER mitigate land (give this for that)

So, in my opinion, you can take the environmenatl/personalized plate program and stick it up Feinstein and Boxers respective derier's.

berettafan 10-15-2007 09:42 AM

I debated for some time over this subject when i got my 911. I really wanted 'NLA' (reference to air cooled 911's, longhoods, etc) but it was taken. Considered 901 also but opted against it.

Instead i chose a plate that i felt would share my feelings about the car and why i like to drive it. I went with 'ONRAMP'.

Probably a bit dorky but i can tell you guys i am one heck of a major leage dork. I like that it doesn't imply an exclusivity or snobbishness nor does it claim that i am fast. it simply says that i really, really love accelerating out of turns and flat out get wood if the turn happens to be downhill onto a fast highway.

dickepoohp 10-15-2007 10:11 AM

For several years, I put 'NUNBETR" on my wife's coupe. I enjoyed the 'inside' joke of having most people think it said None better, instead of my description of my gambling ex-nun bride.

83-911SC cab 10-15-2007 10:26 AM

I think that it is your car and if you want to put something on it to personalize it to your attitude then what is the difference between personalized tags and wheels , spoilers, or say body kits not originally installed on your car. To each his/her own I say.

That said I have owned my pride for about 8 years and have had 2 different sets of personalized tags for her that whole time. I am a paid Firefighter in Va. so my first set was Professional Firefighter (also read as union) tags that said "911911". My next and current tags are Volunteer Firefighter ( no longer in union) tags that read "F911D".

So I say keep personalizing you cars however you feel fit to for lets face it if people looked down on all types of this, I guess we would all enjoy our cars just a little less.

If you want it, go for, who gives a fuch what some one else thinks unless you have an offensive plate

dshepp806 10-15-2007 10:55 AM

I, too, worry about the ease with which some tags can be recalled. I recall once,..at a redlight,..making a left hand turn towards the next redlight (.4 miles down the road)...got on it pretty good,..began to brake for the upcoming redlight,..only to see some stupid idiot go barreling through this redlight (in the right lane) and hit someone T-bone style.....terrible accident....2 hours later, there's a knock at my door,...it's the County Sheriff. Tells me someone observed that we were "racing"....I nearly had a heart attack. Informed the officer that there was no racing going on (that I was aware of...) I braked and the ******* went thru the redlight nearly killing someone......end of story. Ever since, I've contemplated ditching the tag and going for something a bit more obscure (and harder to remeber by sight).

Best,

baldman 10-15-2007 11:24 AM

When I first got my 911 I considered getting personalized plates, but I have the MY correct California "blue plates" on it now and (to me) it's a little cooler than having the updated style plates, but personalized.

That being said - it's your car... do what makes you happy!

BeyGon 10-15-2007 11:51 AM

I wanted something different but couldn't find anything I liked that wasn't used, then I went with the year, and last three didgets of the VIN. 89 615. It's a Targa and there were only 860. I am surprised that more Porsche people don't pick up on it. Most ask what it means.

Phew. I thought it meant that you (or, rather, your wife) frequently beat up on nuns.

Personally, I'm too cheap to spend whatever it is to get a vanity plate. I also like not having something that's easy to remember (by cops or witnesses). But I did think it was funny, though, to see a new DB9 this weekend with the plate: SPOONFD.

I became a grandfather at age 45 via second marriage. The focus of my plates is the kids. I'm Papamark and my wife is Mannie.

The rear plate is self-explanitory. The front has a story:

The kids have the typical problems with words that start with "s". One day, Michael was telling Mannie that he still liked the scooter he got for Christmas.

HM-ITLMC = "Hey Mannie, I till like my cooter". I can't remember laughing so hard in my life!
