Does Top of My Engine Look Okay?

Trying to chase a temp problem on my SC. I pulled my fan housing to get a better look at the cylinders. Since I have nothing to compare my engine to, I am hoping that some of you will let me know if everything looks 'normal'.

The right side towards the rear seems rather oily to me. I was pretty hard to get a good photo - but I think that these get deep enough.

Thanks in advance!

Is the engine still inside your car? It seems like it is. The engine looks fine to me, nothing that I would think is causing a temperature problem.

Have you tried to run the engine and felt the oil supply and return lines to your thermostat (to see if the oil is making it to your tombrone cooler in the right front wheel well)?

Yes, still inside car.

I don't want to get into all of the 'other' issues that might be causing high temps b/c I already have open threads regarding that. My main concern now is simply ruling out dirty cylinder heads.

But to answer your question, ... all of my lines get hot, i have great oil pressure, timing and mixture are good, car runs great. The only thing that has changed since last summer was that I removed my heater blower/components and added a block off plate. Had it at the track in March and it almost reached 250 ... currently it can reach 250 just by driving on the highway for 30 mins.

Isn't that the right side toward the FRONT?

Common area for leaks - oil cooler gasket, etc. Wouldn't cause overheating.

Yes ... right side towards front of car ... I was referencing the photo instead of the car.

Seems like I can rule this out as a culprit then.

You are missing your fan that's why it's running hot!

It wouldn't hurt to clean off the oil residue but I wouldn't expect your car to be reaching 250 on the highway over that.

Can you post the links to the other threads you have going on? I don't want to ask questions that you have already answered on the other threads.

Hi MCA. Are the air guides present on the bottom of the cylinders?

Assuming no issues with the engine or oil system and warmish ambient temperatures, a fender or front-mount oil cooler is the solution to 250º oil temps. If fender-mounted, in addition to an electric fan, provide good air flow with air diverters and/or ducts.

My engine looked similar to mancini's photo. The breather cover and thermostat were leaking for quite a few years and ended up making a serious mess.

Wow, that is some serious stuff. Were temps higher as a result?

Keith ... not sure I follow. Can you explain?

You are not referring to the air flow guide behind the fan housing are you?

If so, yes.

I can empathize with your frustration, mca. Have you had a look at your spark plugs? This may help to give you an indication of a lean condition. I would also check the flow of each injector. Improper fuel at one or more cylinders would mean detonation and high temps. Any signs of an exhaust leak at heads due to corrosion on the heat exchangers?

if you are running the stock trombone cooler stop looking. It's right there in front of you - the trombone. It sucks! A Carrera fender cooler will drop you 20-30 degrees and a front mounted cooler will go another 20-30 depending on the style. My SC ran 250 degrees in stock form. It now runs 190-200 on the hottest of track days. I have a front mounted cooler.

mca, I've been following both threads and I'm thinking that you might want to remove the external thermostat and test it. You might have an external stat that is not completely opening. It would restrict flow to the t'bone cooler. It wouldn't effect oil pressures but it would limit the cooling properties of the cooler. Someone may know the answer to this..but I'm wondering it you could run without the thermostat for testing purposes? Don't do that until one of the big guns weighs in.
