How loud is a flowmaster 80 series??
I have searched and searched and searched, but am still wondering how lound the flowmaster 80 series crossflow is? I know Jack and Bill run these, who has heard these cars run? Will they pass sound at most tracks? Also, is the flowmaster louder than the equivilant magnaflow or dynomax?
I am about to start fabbing my setup for B&B's on the 3.4........ Cheers |
Dynomax #17725
Simply the best sounding muffler for your application. Sweet music. I had a Flowmaster and dumped that raspy beast within a week. The Dynomax is louder than stock at idle, but you can easily have a conversation at normal levels. At 5000 RPM's the the thing wails. Sweet flat six howling. Honestly? If my Dynomax broke and I needed a new muffler, I'd pay $500 for it. Good thing they only run about $100. __________________ |
Hmmm, I had read your posts before and may now search one out here locally. Thanks for the feed back Moses.
Don't you have cats on yours too? Cheers |

I have the Dynomax per Moses reccomendation in my 3.6 - it isn't pretty but I have had many positive comments on the sound at the track. Pretty burbly at low rpm, but above 4000 rpm it does wail. No cats, kinda ugly looking I suppose, but the price is right. No droning. Wouldn't want it in a daily driver, too loud I would think. Hopefully you can see it in the pic.

I've got a Flowmaster, and I love it. See my post here:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/101890-flowmaster-my-turn-pics.html?highlight=flowmaster Unlike Moses, i LIKE the raspy/mechanical/higher pitched exhaust sound. Loudness is hard to describe, but it's medium loud. "Grrrrrrrrrrr" sound at idle at medium loudness, then mild to 3500rpm, then all heck breaks loose above 4Krpm, with high pitch shriek. I purposely wanted to avoid a "burbly" sound. No offense to Mustang 5.0's, but that's not what I wanted my Porsche to sound like. I was looking for a more exotic, truer Porsche sound. I'm not sure if the Dynomax has any fiberglass/packing, but I believe that mufflers that do have a packing decreses the pitch/tone to a lower, burbly sound, whereas the Flowmaster is all metal internal chambers w/out packing. The only other muffler I like is the M&K--quieter than mine, with good tone. |

I've got an 8000 Series Flowmaster muffler (#42582 - Camero application) with Mandrel bent 2.5 tubing on my 2.8 with SSIs. It's louder at idle than the 2/2 balanced sport muffler but quiter at cruising rpm (4k) without the drone - I can actually carry on a conversation (not with myself but with some else in the car). I believet that it would pass the 92dB restriction at Leguna but don't know that for a fact.

We've been using the Flowmaster 80 on our 3.4 twin plug race motor w/1 5/8" headers for a few years. 92db at Infineon. I use slip in baffles when I drive it on the street. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192894835.jpg

Jeff:
I had one of those Flowmasters on the turbo SC engine. It was loud, and heavy...it weighed 19 pounds, complete. But, you could sort of converse with someone in the car. I put on an M&K, which is way louder but only weighs about 5 pounds with the T4 flange and the tailpipe. So, I traded louder for weight savings. Pat |
I have an M&K now, but is way to loud and it drones pretty bad too. I am trying to build a replacement...... The car weighs 2270 so I could gain a couple pounds if I had too..... I don't need "quiet" but I need to not go deaf...

Which part are you questioning?
|
I have the Bursch single in / out and it uses a Dynomax 17733. Sounds good and is quiet enough to not bother me, but is loud enough to make my wife comment on the noise. On their web site they have several models listed in the same category, with flow rates - so you can figure out which one fits your needs.
I looked up the 17225 mentioned earlier - it seems to support CFM flow of the 3.2, but does not claim to be HP loss free at that flow rate. Others claim to be HP loss free up to and above the pumping rate of the 3.2 L engine. I just ordered two Magnaflow 6 inch round 14 inch long straight through / perforated and packed with constant roving fiberglass and steel. I am fabbing up a dual out system to hook to my 993 HE's. I intend to have two separate outlets, one from each bank, since the flat six does not need a cross over pipe. I am hoping for a nice 3 cylinder wail from each bank, without being obnoxious or too loud. We'll see...I'll post results in a few weeks once it is together if you want me to. |
Sorry to Hijack the thread, but it seems like you guys might have the answer I'm looking for about the Dynomax 17725.
From the pictures posted, it appears as if you can plum an in/out on each side?? From their Website, it looks like the higher flow mufflers that are 2 in/ 2 out have the 2 in on one side, and the 2 out on the other... Obviously would not work for a 911? I've also ridden in Jack's car at the track (with B&B's & Flowmaster Muffler). It's actually far quieter in the car than you would believe, after watching and listening to him blast by on a couple of hot laps! His car is just plain loud at full throttle when passing by, but a sweet loud if that makes any sense? In the car, there is no problem carrying a conversation at normal voice tone when flying down the track at full throttle with windows down! |
I have a flowmaster 80 2-in-2-out with bursch headers on the race car. It is quite loud, especially with no carpet or dampening. I love the sound and I get LOTS of comments at the track...lots of "THATS what a Porsche should sound like!" Kids and Dads point.

Has anyone tried the Flowmaster Super 40?

Magnaflow if you're looking for a streetable x-flow muffler. Best sound, perfect levels, 100% happy with it

Dynomax tech support just told me that the Ultra Flo X would work better since it has a cross-through design and that the 17725 doesn't. He said the 17725 would create too much back pressure. Does the 17725 make good power on the dyno?
