Older 911 X Country Photo-Journal
Posted an earlier thread about my upcoming x country with my 85 911. Happy to report the trip was uneventful but most enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who provided their contact info and / or input / encouragement.
Thanks especially to Jack at Stuttgart Southwest in Tempe. Jack is the busy owner of the shop and he spent about 7 hours with me going over my car. We didn't find much but I left with confidence that we'd make it and we did. The bill was very reasonable and I gained much grin value snooping around his shop filled with old cars and parts. With support from shops like Stuttgart and Pelican's those of with older cars don't want for much. We did change out the DME relay with one I had purchased from Pelican's and had been keeping in my glove box. Jack said the newer versions are more reliable. So now the old one is the spare. I also keep a spare clutch cable and we intended to replace that too. However upon inspecting the clevis we decided it was ok. Inspection of the front rotors revealed some discoloration of the grease. They were removed disassembled, degreased and repacked. Here are a few pics. Sorry about the focus.. Lots of other patients waiting for their appts too. ![]() Jack in his element - one of the nicest people I've met ![]() ![]() About to leave Chandler - 4:00 AM Saturday ![]() early afternoon Tucumcari NM at Arby's ![]() 7:00 PM Sunday - tucked away in his new home in Ohio. ![]() ![]() Conclusion: If your old 911 is in good shape forget about the miles. This car has 206K now and it was a dream to drive 1900 miles. Did 1000 miles the first day and it was like 200 in my Honda. These are great machines and built to be driven. Cheers!
